Following clinical suspicion, we’ve had further cases of Bluetongue confirmed this week, spread across the practice area, in both cattle and sheep. Some holdings have been fairly significantly affected, with multiple sick animals simultaneously. We are also waiting for results back from suspicious cases that we have seen in the last few days. Some of the cases we have seen have shown a number of the typical clinical signs described in these pictures, others have been more subtle, showing just lameness or lethargy.
If you spot anything concerning or unusual in your livestock, please get in touch. or contact DEFRA directly on 03000 200 301. There is a legal obligation to report these cases and it is vital that we support the country in tracking disease spread and continuing to build our understanding of disease.
In England, confirmation of disease will NOT place you under restriction but will aid your management and treatment decisions.
As well as the visible clinical signs that can be seen, not all infected animals will be outwardly unwell, but the virus can also have detrimental hidden effects on fertility that may not become visible until later in the year.
