HG College have just released a free online course exploring the science behind dreams. It offers a fascinating look at what modern research tells us about why we dream, the role of REM sleep, and how our unconscious mind processes experience.

An excellent resource for anyone working in mental health, coaching, or personal development — or simply curious about the inner workings of the dreaming brain.

🧠💤 Highly recommended!

The power of 7:11 breathing...

On our Human Givens College training courses, we teach a technique known as 7:11 breathing, because it’s the most powerful technique we know.

Here is how you do it, and it is as easy as it sounds:
Breathe in for a count of 7.
Then breathe out for a count of 11.

If you can, breathe in and out through your nose, not your mouth.

Make sure that your diaphragm (tummy) swells out when you breathe in and collapses again when you breathe out. If your chest and shoulders are going up and down, that is shallow breathing, which you want to avoid when panicky.

If you find it easier, breathe in to a count of 3 and out to 5, or whatever suits you best – as long as the out-breath is longer than the in-breath.

Continue in this way for 5-10 minutes – or longer if you have time – and enjoy the calming effect it will have on your mind and body. An added bonus of 7:11 breathing is that the very act of counting is a distraction, helping take your mind off worrying concerns.

The 7:11 breathing technique has been used for thousands of years throughout the world.

A great article, with some avenues you can filter into practicing self hypnosis.

I find sceptics often make the best clients of hypnotherapy - they listen to the science and try it out, and as it works they really make it their own!

Forget the swinging pocket watches, scientists are now praising hypnotherapy as a powerful tool to fight mental and physical pain.

People are often surprised (doubtful even!?) at the 'make you laugh' or 'feel better after just one session'! Therapy doesn't have to be gloomy and it's a wonderful thing to be able to use tools that help people feel better, even before they leave my therapy room!

The human givens approach to psychotherapy and counselling helps people feel better and move on in their lives as quickly as possible. At its heart is the understanding that, when a human being’s essential emotional needs are met well and their innate mental resources are used empoweringly, they will be emotionally and mentally healthy.

What makes this approach different from others is that its therapists look to see what is missing in clients’ lives, with the aim of helping them find ways to better meet their needs and get their lives working again.

It is a practical, forward-focused approach, which concentrates on mastery of skills and understandings that people can use to move on in their lives, instead of focusing on what went wrong in the past.

Research findings show that it leads to significant improvement, usually in between one and six sessions.

Clients also gain greater resilience against future setbacks, as they understand what maintains emotional health and have practical ways in which to do so.

Causes of Poor Sleep:
It is extremely common to find that when people are experiencing heightened levels of emotional distress, they also have problems with their sleep. People who are depressed are likely to be oversleeping for hours and hours and still waking up exhausted. People who are anxious may experience insomnia or broken sleep and, because they aren’t getting enough REM sleep, there isn’t enough opportunity for their emotional arousal to discharge, resulting in them carrying their worries from one day into the next.

However, there are other causes of poor sleep. Poor sleep can be caused by lifestyle factors or a lack of ‘sleep hygiene’– a person’s behaviour in relation to sleep. Because we compartmentalise, people will often fail to notice the connections between what they do during their waking time and the health of their sleep.

In some cases, poor sleep can be the root cause of the problems – poor sleep leads to emotional problems, which then exacerbates the poor sleep and the whole thing continues in a cycle.

Overcome Sleep Issues:
Human Givens therapy helps restore natural sleep patterns by addressing underlying emotional issues, improving sleep-related habits, and enhancing the client’s self-awareness. It also builds up a stock of life resources, equipping clients with powerful tools to maintain their physical and emotional health into the future.
