Is It Useful to Grief? 🐾

Grief is a heavy thing. It sits in your chest like a stone, making every breath a little harder to take. It lingers in quiet moments—when you see an empty spot on the couch where they used to sleep, or when you catch yourself reaching for their favorite treat at the store. And in those moments, you might wonder: Is this pain even useful? Does it serve any purpose?

The truth is, grief is love with nowhere to go. It’s the echo of all the warmth, the joy, the countless little moments that once filled your days. When a beloved pet—or anyone we cherish—leaves us, the love doesn’t vanish. But without them here to receive it, that love turns into something else: aching, longing, sorrow.

So, is grief useful? Maybe not in the way we usually think of usefulness. It won’t fix anything. It won’t bring them back. But it does matter. Because grief is proof—proof that what you had was real, that it meant something. That they mattered.

In time, the sharp edges of grief soften. The memories that once brought tears might someday bring a smile, bittersweet but tender. And though the love no longer has its old destination, it doesn’t disappear. It stays with you, changes you, becomes part of how you remember, how you care, how you live.

So yes, grief is useful—not because it heals you, but because it honors what was lost. And in that honoring, you keep them close, just in a different way.

I sent you a little white feather,
I placed it right there in your way.
I wrapped it in love with a message,
to let you know you’ll be okay.

It’s my quiet way of reaching out,
a gentle reminder that I’m still near.
Even if you can’t see me,
my presence is clearer than fear.

I drew you a colorful rainbow,
it followed your car for a while.
I made a spectacular rainbow,
hoping it would bring back your smile.

The vibrant arcs across the sky,
they’re my promise to never let go.
Though I may not walk beside you,
my love will always flow.

I flew down a beautiful robin,
it landed right there on your ledge.
I prayed he would give you the strength
to push yourself back from the edge.

His song was my voice whispering softly,
“You are stronger than you know.”
In his flutter and chirp, hear my laughter,
let it guide you through sorrow’s undertow.

I try every day to remind you
that I never did go away.
The feathers, the rainbows, the robins—
they’re my way of trying to stay.

These signs aren’t just happenstance;
they’re threads in the tapestry we share.
Each one a piece of my spirit,
woven into the fabric of air.

So when you find a feather,
or see a rainbow stretch wide,
know that I’m sending you courage,
and all of my love inside.
