At Zoe Turnbull Funeral Directors, I'm proud to offer Direct Cremation Funerals alongside my full traditional funeral services.

A Direct Cremation is a simple and dignified option for those who prefer a straightforward farewell for their loved one.

Unlike large online providers where all communication is done through forms, emails, or the post, I am your local independent funeral director offering a personal touch: no call centres or faceless processes.

I will meet you in person, look after your loved one, provide reassurance and comfort during this difficult time. I take care of the arrangements without you needing to navigate complicated forms or online paperwork. As part of your community, my focus is, and always will be, to care for families with professionalism and ensure your loved one is cared for with dignity and respect at all times.

The DIRECT Plus package offers in addition our service room to be utilised for families to plan a personal gathering, memorial, or celebration of life at a time that feels most meaningful to them.

Recently we made a slightly longer journey to conduct a private family funeral at the newly opened East Lothian Crematorium on the outskirts of Edinburgh, for a very unique lady.
Resting in a simple cardboard coffin, decorated with "cows" — exactly as she said she wanted. Keeping watch from the top, there was a familiar little figure that felt entirely fitting for her
Described by her family as spirited and thoughtful, fun, unique, innovative and, at times, wonderfully eccentric.
This lady was someone who brought lightness and laughter into people’s lives, and the final song held many memories for her family. It was one she loved to share —teaching it, singing it, and passing it on so that it became part of family life.

From 1st April 2026 Scottish Borders Council have increased the Purchase of a Lair and interment Fee throughout the scottish borders. Unfortunately, these charges are set by the local authority and are completely out with our control.

We provide a range of funeral packages designed to make our services accesible to more families and to provide additional choice during what can be a difficult time.

International Children’s World Book Day 2026

Dealing with the loss of a family member touches every generation. At Zoe Turnbull Funeral Directors, we have created a library of useful resources and a range of books allowing our local community to access the bereavement support they may need in order to work through their loss. These books are also available to educate and help kids understand bereavement as a natural part of life.

We also have a kids activity area with colouring books, toys and puzzles to keep them engaged while you attend to the necessary arrangements.

🎩 NATIONAL WEAR A HAT DAY 2026 - MORE THAN JUST TRADITION 🎩

My top hat is more than tradition and still holds a meaning in modern day funerals. It is a symbol that the occasion is solemn and that we are there to guide the family with the utmost respect and honour for the person who has passed away. It became part of the funeral director’s attire to represent dignity, authority and professionalism

When I became a Funeral Director I was advised by my local tailor that it was tradition when in church or during formal occasions ladies would always keep their hats on to protect their modesty and as it was part of their outfit rather than an accessory. Men would always remove their hat. I continue with the heritage to women by keeping my top hat on and showing our commitment to maintaining the highest standards of respect and tradition to our families.

Today, on , we are not only proud to wear our top hat 🎩 to uphold traditions but also raise awareness to find a cure for all types of brain tumours.
