Several private residences in the North East. Why is your page Gosforth and Jesmond? We live and work in this area (except one of us who lives in Edinburgh and divides her time between there and Gosforth). Gosforth and Jesmond have fascinating histories, and we are curating and sharing them through our blog. How are you qualified to carry out this type of work? Between us, we have over forty years of experience in research and business, including experience working in museums and with old buildings regarding funding eligibility. We have experience in graphic design, which we use to illustrate our folios and highlight period properties with our House Portraits. What is your vision? We aim to connect as many people as possible to their personal heritages. We love digging through the archives and helping people connect to their own histories either by who they are or where they live. We help people recognise and document their heritage through our carefully researched folios and illustrations.. We like our customers to feel like they have a part in the story, and we present our research in an inviting and involving style. Why is heritage important? Heritage can be anything that a person, family, business or community values enough to protect it for the future. Heritage is important because it gives us a sense of singular and communal identity.

A fascinating glimpse into a passing phase of life for a long-standing colliery house. If you are of a certain age it may evoke memories. For our younger followers, you will not be able to imagine!

The Trap
"I was born in the unheated bedroom of a one up, one down colliery house in a snowstorm. The midwife couldn’t get there so my Grandma delivered me. I spent much of my early childhood in that house as my mother worked and I loved it. It was a couple of doors down from the Trap, the social heart of Coxlodge."

House histories in the making! We've been bringing together some amazing histories.

In a recent project we traced the history of a house back to 1737🤩

During our research we transcribed over 9 surrenders of property documents that uncovered the early history of the property.

Transfer of Copyhold Land: In the manorial system, tenants did not own land outright (freehold); they held it "by copy of court roll" (copyhold). When a tenant wanted to sell, pass on, or mortgage their property, they had to "surrender" it back to the Lord of the Manor, who would then "admit" the new tenant.

🌟 Exciting News! 🌟

We are thrilled to share a glowing review for our recently completed house history folio! 📜🏡 Our research delves deep into the rich history and stories associated with the home, and it’s heartwarming to hear such positive feedback from our clients.

"We commissioned Discovering Heritage to create a history of our property which was listed. The process was straight forward and Fiona kept us updated on the research. The breadth of historical research and information provided has been fascinating. Discovering more in depth history of the previous owners and giving it a sense of place in the history of the town has been a wonderful insight. The research was sensitively presented in a beautiful folio case with a unique drawing of the house included. The drawings will be framed and will hang in the front rooms of the house for our guests to enjoy."

Thank you to all who have supported us on this journey. If you’re interested in uncovering the history of your own home, feel free to reach out! We would love to help you tell your story. 🏠✨

IMAGINE what your house was like for the very first residents who lived in it.

"Can you visualise how Rothwell Road would have looked with its new red brick and glowing sandstone exteriors? Not to mention the highly decorative wooden porches and the tram cars running past.

Who wouldn't be thrilled to be moving to a house on this street? Lets take a look at the wider aspect at that time so you can picture the road as it might have been for the first residents."

"When I moved into my house there was a huge mantelpiece in the lounge which was painted white. For years I kept on refreshing the white paint. One day I decided to strip the paint off and see what it was like underneath.

I found a beautiful white marble Adams style mantlepiece that surrounded bottle green tiles. It looks so welcoming with the fire on. This more than anything else made me wonder who else had sat around the hearth and what life was like for the people who lived here when the property was brand new.

I also found an old red leatherette wing chair in the attic, this wasn't quite so appealing!"

Have you found any little treasures or anything particularly awful when you renovated your house?

Graveyard Tour St Nicholas Churchyard

Samson Walker

On our tour of Gosforth St. Nicholas churchyard we came across the gravestone recording the death of Samson Walker a servant to George Armytage of Kirklees, Yorkshire, who died at Low Gosforth House on 23 January 1830 aged 29 years presumably whilst his master was staying with the Brandling family.

Armytage and Brandling Connection

There was a family relationship between the Armytage and Brandling families - in 1824 George Armytage's daughter Henrietta married Charles Brandling.

Back to Gosforth and Richard Welford.
Thornfield Villa, was a property on Gosforth High Street that has been demolished but was adjacent to the property now occupied by the Ahad restaurant.
Richard Welford appears to have lived in this property at the time of his death on 20 June 1919.

This is the second time we have come across this particular ghost property in our research of Gosforth High Street. Twenty years earlier in 1861 Mark Frater was residing in the same house. (More on that tomorrow)
Richard Welford was an archaeologist, historian and biographer. His publications include the following

History of The Parish of Gosforth (1879)

Men of Mark Twixt Tyne and Tweed - three volumes of biographies of eminent men (1895)

Newcastle and Gateshead In the 14th, 15th &16th centuries (1884)

Joshua Alder was one of the founders of the Newcastle Natural History Society in 1839. In 1849 he became the president of the Tyneside Naturalists Field Club of which he was also a founding member in1846. The chronicle goes on to report that –
