“The body keeps the score.”
It’s also the title of one of the world’s best-selling books on trauma and healing, and one that has shaped many conversations around the connection between our experiences, our nervous system and our physical wellbeing.
But what does it actually mean?
For me, it speaks to something I see time and time again in the women I work with.
We can understand something logically.
We can know we’re safe.
We can know a situation is over.
And yet the body can still be carrying the emotional imprint of what happened.
Sometimes it shows up as anxiety, tension, overwhelm, exhaustion, difficulty switching off, people-pleasing or feeling constantly on alert.
The body and mind are not separate.
When we experience difficult life events, stress, loss, trauma or prolonged pressure, the nervous system adapts to help us survive.
The challenge is that many of those patterns can remain long after they’re needed.
This is why my work isn’t simply about relaxation.
It’s about helping people reconnect with themselves.
Through EFT, Reiki, nervous system support and gentle awareness practices, we create space to notice what the body may still be holding onto and support it in finding a greater sense of safety, calm and balance.
Our experiences don’t just live in our minds. They live in our bodies too.
The physical sensations that come with anxiety, fear, grief, stress and overwhelm can feel incredibly real and, at times, life-limiting.
Because although an upsetting event may have passed, the body can continue to experience the emotions connected to it in the present moment.
Sometimes healing isn’t about learning more.
It’s about listening more deeply to what the body has been trying to tell us all along. 🌿
