Too Hot to Sleep? Here’s What You Can Do
As we enter the final month of autumn, many of us swap our lighter duvets for the thicker, warmer ones. I did mine last week—just in time, I thought, because snow was on the way. Big mistake! You see, it’s our first winter in this house, and being a relatively new build, it’s super well-insulated.
I thought I was prepared, but after just one night under my "middle-of-the-road" blanket, I found myself waking up in a pool of sweat—even with the window wide open and snow falling outside! At an age where hormonal shifts are to be expected, I’ve realised the era of super-heavyweight duvets might be behind me.
Now, I’m layering blankets: one warm, one cool. It’s the best of both worlds and lets me adapt throughout the night without completely throwing the covers off. I’ve even added a bedside fan for good measure. And while I haven’t perfected my setup yet, my current strategy of sleeping half in, half out of the duvet seems to be doing the trick.
But why does overheating affect our sleep so much, and what can we do about it? Let’s dive in.

Why Overheating Disrupts Sleep
When we sleep, our body temperature naturally drops as part of the circadian rhythm. This cooling process signals to our brain that it’s time to rest. But when the environment is too warm or our bedding traps heat, it disrupts this process, leaving us tossing and turning instead of drifting off.
Overheating can prevent you from reaching the deeper stages of sleep your body needs to repair and restore itself. This is why waking up drenched in sweat can leave you feeling groggy and unrested the next day.

Practical Tips to Beat the Heat
If overheating is sabotaging your sleep, try these simple strategies to create a cooler, more comfortable sleeping environment:

Layer Wisely: Instead of using one thick duvet, try layering blankets of varying weights. This gives you more control to add or remove layers throughout the night.

Embrace Natural Fabrics: Bedding made from cotton, bamboo, or linen is breathable and helps wick away moisture, keeping you cooler than synthetic materials.

Control Room Temperature: Aim for a bedroom temperature between 16–18°C (60–65°F). Open a window, use a fan, or even crack the door to let air circulate.

Mind Your Sleepwear: Opt for lightweight, loose-fitting sleepwear made from natural fibres, or sleep without clothing if you’re comfortable.

Cool Down Before Bed: A lukewarm shower before bed can help lower your core body temperature. Avoid hot showers—they can have the opposite effect.

Strategic Hydration: Stay hydrated during the day, but limit water intake an hour or two before bed to avoid those pesky middle-of-the-night bathroom trips.

Use Cooling Accessories: Cooling pillows, mattress toppers, or even a damp washcloth placed on pulse points (like your wrists or neck) can help regulate your temperature.

Finding Your Balance
Managing nighttime overheating isn’t about creating the "perfect" environment—it’s about balance. For me, that means layering blankets, cracking the window, and keeping a fan at the ready. Some nights, half-in, half-out of the duvet works. Other nights, I need to switch to my lighter blanket entirely.
Sleep is deeply personal, and what works for one person might not work for another. The key is experimenting and finding what helps you feel most comfortable.
As for me? I’m giving it another week, and if I’m still too hot, the summer blanket will be back on—and I’ll be throwing the hubby some long johns to cope!

Living with Chronic Illness: How Mindset and Self-Care Transform the Journey
People who know me are often amazed at the things I accomplish, especially considering I live with multiple chronic illnesses: hypermobility, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and migraines. Most of the time, I manage to keep these conditions at bay by using tools I’ve learned over the years, particularly the connection between body and mind.
But this week, I’ve been reminded who’s really in charge.
A flare-up hit hard, and as I sat on the sofa, frustration bubbled up inside me. I felt sorry for myself—lazy, useless, annoyed that I couldn’t even hold a cup of tea without spilling it all over my hand and the floor. Chronic illness forces you to slow down, to listen to the signals your body is sending, and to adapt.
The guilt crept in, as it always does. I felt lazy. I felt like a failure. But I reminded myself of something I’ve come to deeply understand rest is not laziness. It’s self-preservation. Chronic illness teaches you that when the body demands care, you have to give it—because the alternative is worse.
What Does a Flare-Up Feel Like?
Right now, I’m in the middle of a flare-up, and it feels like my body has completely betrayed me. The pain is relentless, a dull but unyielding ache in every joint—my fingers, toes, ankles, pelvis, knees, and neck all feel like they’ve been rusted shut. Although there’s only minimal puffiness it feels like it’s so swollen and puffy I can’t move it.
Every movement is a monumental effort, like dragging my limbs through thick treacle whilst doused in wet cement pulling you down, it’s like gravity has gotten heavier. My hands are so weak that even picking up a cup of tea is impossible. My fingers refuse to cooperate, like strands of wet spaghetti, and the smallest task feels like climbing a mountain.
Walking is no better. My legs feel like they’re encased in concrete blocks, and every step is a battle against gravity. Climbing the stairs? Forget it. It’s like dragging my body upward with limbs that no longer belong to me. Even sitting upright takes everything I’ve got—my muscles ache just from holding myself in one position, and the sheer effort of staying upright leaves me drained.
Then there’s the skin pain. It’s hard to describe to someone who hasn’t experienced it, but every inch of my skin feels like it’s on fire, like I’ve been stung by nettles all over. The lightest touch is unbearable, a sharp, stabbing sensation that sends shocks through my body. Even my eyelids ache, and the weight of a blanket feels like too much to bear. My whole body aches, like I’ve been on my feet for 24 hours in unsupportive shoes.
And the fatigue… it’s more than being tired. It’s a bone-deep exhaustion that makes even breathing feel like a chore. My body feels as though it’s been filled with wet cement, every movement heavier and slower than the last. No amount of sleep helps; I wake up just as exhausted as when I went to bed.
The brain fog is its own kind of torture. It’s like a thick mist has settled in my mind, clouding my thoughts and slowing everything down. I struggle to find the words I want to say, my thoughts slipping away before I can catch them. Even keeping track of time feels impossible—it drags endlessly, stretching every moment into something unmanageable.
My temperature fluctuates from being ok to almost feverish to cold because my body is under so much stress and inflammation it can’t regulate its temperature. Don’t even get me started on the GI issues that it then brings on.
On top of all that, my emotions are running high. Frustration bubbles up constantly—frustration at my body for failing me, at the world for not understanding, at myself for even feeling frustrated. There’s sadness, too, for the things I can’t do right now, and guilt for needing to depend on others.
This is the reality of a flare-up. It’s not just physical—it’s all-encompassing. And yet, it’s invisible to the outside world. From the outside, I look like someone simply resting on the sofa. But inside, it’s a storm. And when people say, “Just push through it, Go for a walk. Stop being lazy” they can’t begin to understand how impossible that is and how their words sting almost as much as the flare up.
This isn’t laziness. This isn’t weakness. This is survival.
The Emotional Toll of Chronic Illness
The physical pain is only part of the battle. Emotionally, flare-ups are a rollercoaster. Frustration, sadness, and even guilt rear their heads. When your body fails you, it can feel like you’ve failed.
What makes it harder is the isolation. Chronic illness often hits during moments that should be joyful—on holidays, during family events, or when you’ve finally planned something for yourself. It demands dependence on others, which can be hard to accept if, like me, you’re the one who’s used to nurturing and supporting everyone else.
Why Mindset Matters
Mindset is everything when it comes to chronic illness. It’s the difference between feeling utterly defeated and finding a way to adapt and move forward.
In the midst of this flare-up, I could feel myself slipping into self-pity. Thoughts like, “Why me? I can’t do this. I’m useless,” started to creep in. But I’ve learned that these thoughts only make the flare-up worse. Instead, I chose to ask myself: “What can I do today to support myself? What do I need right now?”
Mindset shifts like this don’t take away the pain, but they shift the focus. Instead of dwelling on what I can’t do, I focus on what I can do. Maybe I can’t clean the house or cook dinner, but I can hydrate, rest, and ask for help. And those are valid, important actions.
Communication is another crucial piece. I’ve learned to openly explain my symptoms to those around me—how I feel physically, mentally, and emotionally. I let them know what I can and cannot do, and I ask for specific help when I need it. This wasn’t easy at first; as a caregiver by nature, it felt wrong to ask for help. But I’ve come to see it as a strength, not a weakness.
Another mindset shift is about letting go of guilt. Resting when you’re in a flare-up isn’t being lazy—it’s a necessary act of self-preservation. It’s giving your body the time and space it needs to heal. I remind myself that flare-ups are temporary, no matter how endless they feel in the moment.
Mindset is also about finding the small joys where you can. During this flare-up, I couldn’t paint—a hobby I love—but I could watch light-hearted films or do a puzzle. I couldn’t push my body to do anything physical, but I could focus on my breath and repeat my favourite affirmation: “Every day, in every way, I’m getting better and better.”
Mindset doesn’t solve everything, but it gives me the resilience to face whatever my body throws at me. It’s about adapting, accepting, and doing the best I can with what I have in the moment.
Top Tips for Navigating a Flare-Up
Here are some of the strategies I use when managing a flare-up:

Hydrate – Take small sips throughout the day to support your body.
Eat Nutrient-Dense Foods – Give your body the fuel it needs to heal.
Ask for Help – Be specific about what you need from others.
Reframe Your Thoughts – Replace guilt with self-compassion. Healing is not laziness.
Do What You Can – Whether it’s listening to a meditation, practicing deep breathing, or simply lying down, focus on small acts of self-care.
Laugh – Watch a funny movie or show to lift your spirits.
Accept the Present – Let go of what you can’t do today and focus on what you can.
Trust the Process – Remind yourself that this is temporary, and healing takes time.

One of my favourite affirmations is from Émile Coué: “Every day, in every way, I’m getting better and better.” Holding onto this belief has carried me through even the hardest times.
Finding Harmony in Your Healing Journey
Living with chronic illness isn’t easy, but it teaches resilience, patience, and the importance of self-care. It’s about finding harmony between your body and mind, accepting what you can’t control, and focusing on what you can.

Closing Thoughts
This blog was my enough for today. Chronic illness forces us to redefine what productivity and success look like. And that’s okay.
Remember: You are not lazy for needing rest. You are not weak for asking for help. You are choosing to honour your body and give it the care it needs to heal.
Make time for your wellness, or your illness will force you to make the time.

Peaceful from the Inside Out: Creating Harmony in a Busy World
Creating harmony within ourselves is a powerful process that brings us a deep sense of peace and balance. Many of us search for harmony in our lives, hoping to feel at ease, more connected, and better able to handle whatever comes our way. In this blog, we’ll explore what harmony truly means and how you can create it within yourself, leading you to a life of greater fulfilment and wellbeing.
What is Harmony?
Harmony, at its core, is about creating a sense of alignment and balance in our lives. When we think about harmony, we often picture it as calm, contentment, and an inner stillness that feels unshaken by the outside world. Imagine the feeling of listening to your favourite song or standing in a serene garden – there’s a natural flow, a sense that everything is exactly as it should be. When we experience inner harmony, it’s like everything in our lives, from our thoughts to our emotions, comes together in a way that feels effortless.
But here’s the truth: creating harmony doesn’t mean life is free from challenges. It means that, even amid difficulties, you can find peace and resilience within yourself. Harmony allows us to manage stress, connect deeply with ourselves, and create meaningful connections with others. And once we have it, life seems to flow more easily. But how do we get there?
How Can We Begin to Create Harmony?
Achieving harmony isn’t about making sweeping life changes. Often, small, intentional steps have the most significant impact. Here are some practical ways you can start creating harmony in your life:

Create Space for Quiet Moments
One of the simplest ways to invite harmony into your life is by making space for calm, reflective moments. This could be as simple as five minutes of quiet breathing in the morning, a short walk outside, or a few moments of stillness before bed. By incorporating small pauses throughout the day, we can quiet the mind and give ourselves room to breathe.

Cultivate a Positive Focus
Harmony thrives in an environment where we focus on what we want to nurture. Try listing three things you’re grateful for each day or notice small things that bring you joy. When we actively choose to focus on positivity, our mindset gradually shifts, allowing more peace to flow into our lives.

Practice Self-Compassion
Often, the biggest obstacles to inner harmony are our own self-criticisms and judgments. Give yourself permission to be imperfect. When we learn to treat ourselves with kindness, we build a stronger foundation for harmony and resilience. Let go of any “shoulds” that don’t serve you and accept that growth is a journey.

Develop Routines That Support Calm
Harmony is supported by simple routines that bring consistency and structure to our lives. Creating a short evening routine to wind down, a few minutes of mindful breathing in the morning, or taking time to do something you enjoy each day are small but impactful ways to build balance.

Explore Tools to Help You Find Your Calm
There are many accessible techniques that support inner harmony, like breathing exercises, guided visualisations, or gentle stretches. For those looking to dive deeper, a guided workshop can be a wonderful opportunity to explore different ways to bring balance and peace into your daily life.

Introducing the Harmony Within Workshop
If you’re ready to bring more harmony into your life, our Harmony Within workshop is designed just for you. Does It Really Take a Village to Raise a Family?
They say it takes a village to raise a child. But what happens when that village simply doesn’t exist? Today, I was reading a heartfelt discussion among parents who feel isolated and lonely, lacking the support they need to thrive as families. The comments were a mix of struggles—grandparents who ask for money to babysit, friends who are too busy, and rules set by parents that, though understandable, create even more distance. The need for a village is as strong as ever, yet we’re all in our own little islands, wondering why we feel so alone.
In our busy, modern lives, it’s become harder and harder to find that village. Many of us are raising our children without close support. Families are spread across cities, countries, even continents. Everyone is balancing work, finances, and their own commitments, and what little time we do have is often spent trying to keep up with the demands of life, rather than connecting deeply with others.
I’ve seen this in my own journey. Without the ongoing support of extended family or close friends nearby, our family has often had to manage on our own. It’s a lonely path, and it’s one many parents know all too well. We’ve moved a lot, hoping to find that elusive sense of community. We’ve tried connecting with relatives, making new friends, and fostering connections—but it’s never easy, and sometimes it feels like an impossible task.
Rethinking the Village
What if, instead of searching for an existing village, we created our own? Instead of feeling isolated in our individual struggles, could we come together and support each other? Imagine parents helping each other out, sharing advice, offering encouragement, and just being there for one another. We’re all craving connection, yet we rarely think to reach out or take the first step toward building that sense of community.
There’s a growing recognition that we can be each other’s village. We can create spaces that allow us to connect, share, and support one another. Maybe the village doesn’t look like it used to—it’s not about neighbours or family members who live just down the street. Instead, it can be about building relationships with like-minded parents who understand the challenges of raising a family in today’s world.
Creating a New Kind of Village with the Family Thrive Method
I created the Family Thrive Method for this exact reason. It’s a space for parents to come together, not only to learn and grow as individuals but to support each other on this journey. In Family Thrive, we focus on building trust, harmony, and understanding at home, but it’s more than just a programme. It’s an opportunity to connect with other parents who share your challenges, your dreams, and your desire to raise a balanced, resilient family.
Whether it’s sharing experiences, celebrating victories, or just lending a listening ear, Family Thrive is designed to foster a supportive community. Together, we can create the village we’ve been looking for—one where parents support each other, lift each other up, and help each other navigate the complexities of family life.
If you’ve ever felt alone in your parenting journey or wished for a deeper connection with others who truly understand, consider joining us. Let’s come together to create a village that’s about presence, not just presents, and build a stronger foundation for our families. As some of you may have noticed, there have been some big changes happening here at Mindset for Change Ltd. Many of you know me from Nicole Dodd Hypnosis, but after much consideration, I’ve decided to evolve my business to reflect a broader approach that goes beyond hypnosis alone.

The new name, Mindset for Change Ltd., truly captures the heart of what I do. Hypnosis is just one piece of the puzzle—I believe that real, lasting transformation starts with updating our mindsets to create the changes we want to see.

Over the past few months, I’ve been working hard on some wonderful new projects that I’m thrilled to share. As we all know, times have become financially tighter, but the need for support in making positive changes is stronger than ever. That’s why I’ve created group programmes that make working with me more affordable while also building a powerful support system where we can encourage one another as a community.

So, without further ado, here’s an introduction to my Transformation Series, launching next week! Each of these programmes is designed to address key areas of personal growth and well-being:

Harmony Within: A self-hypnosis workshop to empower you with techniques to start making small, positive changes.
Sleep Success Blueprint: A 6-week programme focused on helping you achieve better sleep for a healthier life.
Head Over Meals: A 6-week programme designed to set you up with the right mindset for achieving weight loss without the stress of dieting.
Family Thrive Programme: A 12-week journey focused on helping families build trust, connection, and harmony.
I’ll also be offering regular group EFT sessions where each one will be around a particular topic, these start on the 19th November. And if you are a hypnotist I will also be starting group supervision in the new year.

It’s a lot of exciting change! If you’re curious to learn more, take a look at the new website: www.mindset-for-change.com
