This question has the ability to bring out what's important to you. Are you doing enough of that thing? If not, why not...?

It's often the simple things.

How many situations do you try to control in your day?

Do you continually worry and fret about the events of your day, trying to avoid anxious situations? Stop and consider all the situations in your day that you try to control...

Bizarrely enough, we even try to control the weather. You say to yourself, “I’ve got a day off on Friday and it had better be a nice day.” Friday comes and so does the rain, and that’s the day off to a bad start. But why react that way? It seems obvious that you can’t control the weather, so why get upset when you can’t? And why believe that you can control other events in our life?

You go to the supermarket at night because it should be quiet, it’s full of people and you get annoyed.

You are talking to someone, and they mention the thing they shouldn’t, you get upset and say, “They shouldn’t have mentioned that!”

You attempt to plan your day with military precision, trying to control things you have no control over. It’s tiring trying to juggle, manipulate and even avoid all those different situations in your life. But imagine not having to worry and stress over every detail of your life...

The truth is there’s very little you can control. This world has been spinning around for millions of years, doing its thing without you and it will continue the same way when you’re gone. The only thing in your life you can control is you and your response. Nothing else. While that might be scary at first, it can also be liberating because all you need to do is control you and your response.

So... relax, nothing is under control.

We’re often told to not care what others think but, some self-comparison is necessary to integrate with and adapt to society. Up to a point, anyway.

Comparing yourself to others can have a detrimental effect on your self-esteem, especially if you are trying to gauge how able or capable you are. Since we tend to believe we are more like the people we consider to be above us, and less like the people we consider to be below us, these comparisons can be less than objective and can lead to feelings of inadequacy. Think about it... there is always someone bigger, stronger, richer, prettier, cleverer, or happier (at least it may seem that way to you) than you think you are. People have different innate qualities and abilities and different starting points in life which tend to be forgotten about or even ignored when making comparisons.

The problem is, when we start comparing ourselves to other people, we decide that everyone knows what they’re doing, where they’re going and has their s #*t together, when in fact we’re all just doing our best to get by.

We tend to spend a lot of time living in our heads, which isn’t always a good thing. We have this inner voice (it’s not just me, right?!) that we listen to and worse, believe what it says. The voice causes us grief.

How many times has the inner voice got things wrong, given you bad advice, made up all sorts of stories or simply criticised you? Imagine if that voice was a friend...? You’d have stopped listening to it a long time ago and told it where to go.

The thing is, you CAN ignore that voice, you don’t need to listen to it. Confront it the same way you would if someone suddenly started spouting off at you. Next time you’re in the supermarket and it starts its nonsense, tell it where to go. Or... simply ignore it!

When our ancestors faced a threat, like being attacked by a bear, the fight or flight (sympathetic nervous system) was activated. This caused a number of physiological changes to the body that essentially helped us to run away very quickly or fight. Thankfully, there tends to be no bears in the north-east of Scotland these days, but we do have modern threats.

Fears over our job, money, health and status to name a few are all interpreted by our brains as threats to our survival. When you’re stressed and anxious, your heart rate increases, blood pressure rises, breathing quickens, and your muscles tense up, your body is getting ready for activity – running or fighting. It can feel strange and uncomfortable, especially if you’re in the supermarket doing your shopping but can be very helpful if you’re taking part in some kind of sport.

Anxiety is something that we all experience from time to time. If we’re trying to cross the road when there is a bus coming, it’s a good idea to feel anxious. Anxiety is also helpful when we need to study for an exam. Anxiety lets us know when something is dangerous and when something is important. Anxiety serves a purpose, and we cannot get rid of it and nor would we want to.

Anxiety becomes a problem when it’s there all the time or you know that you shouldn’t be feeling that way during average, everyday situations. Anxiety is a bit like an alarm going off, alerting you to danger. However, sometimes the alarm is faulty and needs reset. Just like the car you used to have where the alarm went off with every gust of wind, your alarm is acting in the same way and simply needs to be reset.

And your alarm can be reset, back to before the time it became a problem.

Are you a people pleaser? A people pleaser is someone who puts others needs ahead of their own. Do you...

Have difficulty saying no?

Agree to things you don’t want to?

Worry about what people think of you?

Always say you’re sorry?

Neglect your own needs to do things for others?

Agree with people when you feel differently?

It can be rewarding helping people, but if you’re doing it reluctantly or out of obligation, it can lead to you feeling drained and stressed. You end up doing things you resent, putting yourself out and feeling taken for granted, which does nothing for your self-esteem. Sure, you might be considered as being a giver or generous but at what cost, a lack of respect from others or for yourself?

People respect people who stand their ground. Begin by establishing which boundaries you want to have, deciding what’s important to you. Say no to the easier things first, make your stand assertively but also sensitively without making excuses. Notice how you feel, it might sit weird with you to begin with, but the moment will pass, it always does, and then you’ll begin to feel more comfortable.

Remember, it’s impossible to keep everyone happy anyway, even with the best intention. As the saying goes, you can please some of the people some of the time but not all people all the time.

Did you know that an act of kindness isn’t a completely selfless act? 🤔

Carrying out an act of kindness can benefit the giver as well as the receiver. A win – win you could say. So, what are you waiting for? Go out there and hug the first person you see! 🤗

Okay, that might have people avoiding you. 🙈 So, whether you jump in to some charity work or maybe something simpler such as holding the door open for someone or even exchanging a smile with a stranger, every thing counts!

Scientific evidence has proven that kindness has an effect. It impacts the brain, heart, immune system and more and it makes you feel good.

So... spread the love dude!✌️❤️

I mention a lot the need to have a self-care plan. And again, I’ll say, self-care isn’t selfish it’s a must, especially in the crazy world we live in. From both personal experience and from the experiences of my clients, I feel and see the benefit all the time, in fact, sometimes it even surprises me. Just being able to have some downtime, to disengage from the world, take a step back and view the events of our life from a different perspective.

When stressed and anxious, we develop what’s called black and white thinking. Black and white thinking causes us to think in absolutes, or we go to the extremes of our thinking. If you think of your thinking as a spectrum, black at one end and white at the other. Between the black and white there are all these shades of grey. With black and white thinking, we can’t see the shades of grey., the emotional brain is in control instead of the rational thinking brain.

However, having some downtime and taking a step back, so to speak, to look at the bigger picture, affects how we look at things and, more importantly, it allows us to see the shades of grey.

I wonder what life would be like, in the present day, if mankind had just given up and decided that flying was beyond our capabilities or if there was no point looking beyond the horse as a means of transport? One thing for sure, our lives would be very different today.

We can appreciate the dedication, commitment and desire of these people, even in the face of setbacks, in which there must have been many, to achieve their goals.

Thomas Edison, ridiculed for spending much time trying to invent the light bulb famously said, “I have not failed, I have just found 10,000 ways that don’t work.” A change of perspective, like Edison, can make all the differnce in your life. A change of perspective might be all you need.

So, what do you need to look at differently...? 🤔

I 'pinched' this from Rhoda Bain @ YogaZone 🙂😋

Your first work out will be tough
Your first day at work will cause you some anxiety
Your first speech will be bad
Your first time starting out on your own will be scary
Your first ANYTHING will take you out of your comfort zone
But you can't make your 100th without making your first. So put your ego aside and make a start.

We all get uncomfortable with our lack of ability or confidence at stuff and forget we all have to start somewhere...🤔 and usually at the beginning - day 1, step 1 or even first class. Learning is a progression.

So wherever you are accept it. Then make a start and you could soon be enjoying your 100th day, step or class!
