UNDERSTANDING TMJ DYSFUNCTION

🔍 Spotlight on TMJ Dysfunction 🔍

Did you know TMJ disorder affects millions with symptoms like jaw pain, headaches, and ear discomfort? Understanding the intricacies of the temporomandibular joint is vital for effective therapy. Stay tuned as we explore comprehensive approaches to relieve TMJ-related issues.

• Chronic Headaches or Migraines: Tension in the jaw can refer pain to the head, leading to persistent headaches.

• Ear-Related Issues: Such as tinnitus, earaches, or a sensation of fullness, often confused with ear infections.

• Neck and Shoulder Pain: The interconnectedness of the muscles can cause pain to radiate into the neck and shoulders.

• Bruxism (Teeth Grinding): Many with TMJ disorder grind their teeth, especially at night, leading to dental issues and exacerbated jaw pain.

• Sleep Disturbances: Pain and discomfort can lead to poor sleep quality, affecting overall health and well-being.

We see this often…

A client presents with a tight neck.

So we treat the neck.

⸻

And it helps.

⸻

But sometimes…

it doesn’t hold.

⸻

So perhaps the question isn’t:

👉 what needs treating?

But…

👉 what are we really looking at?

⸻

🌿 Just something to notice

18/03/2026

Is your client’s neck the problem…
or the result of something deeper?

We’ve all seen it.

Forward head posture.
Rounded shoulders.
Restricted breathing.

But what if what you’re seeing…
isn’t just posture

What if it’s a protective pattern?

A nervous system that no longer feels safe to soften…
so it holds.

In the jaw.
In the neck.
In the breath.

Because forward head posture doesn’t just affect structure.

It influences:

• Breath
• Vagus nerve tone
• Heart rate variability
• Emotional regulation

So the question becomes:

👉 Are we treating posture…
or are we reading the pattern behind it?

This is where Bowen becomes something more.

Not just releasing tension…
but helping the system feel safe enough to reorganise.

✨ When the nervous system settles
posture changes.

✨ When breath returns
the body follows.

This is the work we’re moving towards.

Seeing more.
Doing less.
Understanding the body differently.

If this way of thinking resonates…

A small region of the brain called the insular cortex plays a remarkable role in how we experience the body.

It helps interpret signals related to:

• pain
• temperature
• internal organs
• emotional states
• body awareness

In other words, it’s one of the brain’s key centres for understanding how the body feels from the inside.

Researchers studying touch, movement and body awareness often look at this region because it helps translate sensory signals into conscious experience.

Bowen Therapy works through gentle, specific movements that provide subtle sensory input to the nervous system.

While science has not specifically demonstrated that Bowen “targets” the insula, therapies involving touch are part of the broader conversation about how the brain and body communicate.

Because the nervous system is always listening.

My Sister Jacqui’s Story and how she helps people with Bowen etc 🩷

Here we are with the next of our BTPA interviews with inspirational practitioners and teachers in the Bowen world.

Jacqui and I delve into her path into Bowen, and how her intuitive artwork is part of her self-regulation process.

We discuss her upcoming Beyond Bowen Retreat for Women, taking place in the Scottish Highlands 15-20th May 2026, where she'll be working with advanced Bowen concepts, exploring self-care for the practitioners, running mastermind sessions to help work through business and practical issues and much more.

We discuss the importance of clinical hygiene, making sure that as a practitioner, we are resetting ourselves between clients and her upcoming online training on this topic.

A really interesting conversation and a great chance to consider the importance of taking time out for ourselves as we engage in self-development.

The vagus nerve is one of the body’s primary communication pathways.

It carries information about what’s happening in the body up to the brain — and sends signals from the brain back to many of our vital organs.

This constant feedback helps the body maintain homeostasis across systems like the heart, lungs and digestive organs.

Research also suggests the vagus nerve plays an important role in how the body responds to stress and inflammation.

Bowen Therapists work with an awareness of these communication systems, recognising that the body is always gathering information and adjusting in response.

Because the body isn’t just a collection of parts.

It’s an ongoing conversation.

One of the fascinating aspects of fascia is its sensitivity.

This connective tissue network contains a rich supply of sensory receptors, constantly communicating with the nervous system.

Gentler therapeutic approaches such as Bowen Therapy can influence this remarkable system.

Because fascia is highly responsive, precise input may be enough to stimulate change without the need for sustained force.

Bowen Therapy uses small, precise moves followed by pauses, allowing the nervous system time to register and respond.

Sometimes, subtle input is exactly what the body is listening for.

Pain often gets our attention first.

But it isn’t always where the problem began.

The body works in relationships — muscles, fascia, breathing patterns, and the nervous system all influence each other.

Bowen Therapists follow a structured sequence designed to give the nervous system the information it needs to reorganise, as best it can.

Because sometimes the most helpful place to start isn’t where it hurts.

Pain, tightness and fatigue aren’t always signs that your body is "broken."

Sometimes, they’re signs it has been compensating.

Adapting.
Adjusting.
Managing load.

Bowen Therapy aims to address those adaptive patterns — not by forcing change, but by inviting the nervous system to reorganise.

Your body isn’t the enemy. It’s doing its best.

Sometimes, it just needs a helping hand.

In Bowen Therapy training, we don’t teach force.

We teach listening.

Listening through your hands.

Understanding tissue response.

Working with the nervous system — not overriding it.

That’s the difference precision makes.

Not everyone loves massage oils.

Bowen Therapy doesn’t use them.

Sessions can be performed through light, loose clothing — with no messy residue and no need to shower afterwards. That makes it a practical option for busy people heading back to work, picking up the kids, or continuing their day.

Gentle. Precise. Convenient.

That’s the beauty of Bowen.

Our Story

When I had health issues of my own, my sister treated me with Bowen Technique for pains in my lower back and shoulder and a hormone imbalance. After two treatments I found I was pain free and I was so impressed by my recovery that I was inspired to learn to share this gift with others.

On the first day of the course to learn Bowen in Edinburgh, I knew this is what I was meant to be doing in life. Since then I have treated numerous ailments in a variety of people and I’ve never ceased to be amazed by the restorative power of Bowen.

I studied diligently, and I qualified in September 2004 with the Bowtech Bowen Association. I practice from the Borders Health, Stress and Injuries Clinic, located close to Kelso and I also treat from Complete Health Borders in Galashiels on Wednesdays.

I have now been a practitioner for 13 years and this remarkable therapy never ceases to amaze me and how wonderful I feel when I see the results in such a short time. When my clients come to me and I can see the pain in their faces compared to them returning the week after and seeing the improvement, it gives me such a wonderful feeling knowing I had a little parts to do with it.
