Volunteering is all about freely offering to do something, and across the Cowdenbeath area our volunteers are truly the heart and soul of our communities. Their vibrant energy, selflessness, and dedication make a huge difference in the lives of people, both young and old.

Thanks to our volunteers we have several successful community food projects, some of which are award-winning, that support the most disadvantaged in our communities. Their efforts ensure that everyone has access to nutritious food and a helping hand when needed.

Our youth projects are thriving because of the countless hours our volunteers put in. These projects provide a safe and engaging environment for young people, offering them opportunities that wouldn't exist without the dedication of our volunteers.

Our volunteers create welcoming spaces where local people can find friendly faces to talk to, fostering positive mental health and a sense of belonging. They were all presented with individual certificates of recognition.

As we celebrate Volunteers’ Week 2025, we want to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank each and every volunteer for their tremendous effort and the invaluable contributions they make to the Cowdenbeath Area. Our volunteers are the key to building stronger, more resilient, and influential communities.

Huge thanks Asda Dunfermline

I popped along to Oor Wee Cafe in Kelty to present the volunteers with an Asda Community Diamond certificates.

All the volunteers at the wee cafe go above and beyond to support their local community. Providing meals, food pantry, clothing bank and much needed socialisation. A lot of the local community may only speak to the volunteers that day so it is vitally important they provide the service they do. Well done to all involved, pictured with myslef is some of the wee cafe volunteers accepting their certificate and some chocolates and cakes 🥰.

Oor wee cafe

To our amazing residents of kelty we have received a lot of messages and seen a lot of comments regarding the post about money being raised for Dunfermline Foodbank firstly oor wee cafe would like to say a huge well done to Robert McLaren what an achievement and an amazing thing to do.
So regarding a lot of the comments and questions, no kelty does not have its own Foodbank but ppl in our community can be referred there if in need however we do have a food pantry that is based in kelty community centre and for those that don’t know about us this is what oor wee cafe does,
Oor wee cafe is pretty much the same as a Foodbank where ppl can come and get food but we also have a wee cafe where if you wish you can also have a wee sit down some soup/stovies n have a wee cuppa and chat we run every Tuesday 11.30-1 And any1 in the community can access this if needed you don’t need a referral or have to be in receipt of certain benefits etc again this is for ANYONE that may need it we do ask for a small donation of £2 but pls know that no1 would be turned away if isn’t able to do this. We also for those asking have our own food donation bin in the centre where all non perishable items are greatly received and only used/given out to the people of kelty if anyone would like to know more about what we offer or any questions pls feel free to contact us thanks from oor wee cafe

Oor Wee Cafe

Oor Wee café came about when a group of unemployed individuals wanted to set up an accessible and affordable café so that residents in Kelty could have a place to go and have a healthy tasty meal without the worry of cost. We want to bring the community together in an inclusive and friendly place where they can meet new people in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The cafe will be run on a “donations only” style whereby you only pay what you can afford to pay.

A need was identified due to Kelty being one of the largest villages in Fife with a fast growing population. It has an inadequate bus service and is relatively cut off and there are issues with high social isolation. A public consultation was completed and out of the 146 people who completed the survey 96% of the feedback was positive to the idea.

With the current climate of unemployment, levels of poverty and the roll out of universal credit those people waiting on benefits have to wait up to at least 5 week for their money to come through and although the local food banks can help, they can only offer a 3 day emergency food parcel 3 times a year. There are no food banks in Kelty so the café is to help local people.
