✨ Festive Reminder ✨

It’s totally okay if you’re not as active as usual over the holiday season. This time of year can be busy, emotional, joyful, overwhelming - sometimes all at once. If your routine looks a little different, that’s perfectly normal.

- Rest is just as important as movement.
- Slowing down doesn’t undo your progress.
- You can pick things back up when you’re ready.

So be kind to yourself, enjoy the moments that matter, and move in ways that feel good for you. -

Wishing everyone a healthy, happy, and balanced festive period. 🎄✨

Myth #6: Swimming after eating causes cramps

There’s no solid evidence for this one. You might feel a bit sluggish after a big meal, but swimming is generally safe post-snack. Dive in!

🌟 Meet the Team: Simon

Better Health Facilitator at Kendal Leisure Centre

"The most rewarding parts of my job? Seeing how members improve over time — how their lives change for the better through fitness, MOTs, and classes. It’s all about helping people feel stronger, healthier, and more confident."

Outside of work, you’ll find Simon out on the trails — fell, trail, and ultra running are Simon's top passions. Simon also love walking with his kids, going to gigs, football matches, cooking, reading, and listening to music.

Favourite foods? Chicken Madras, Lasagne and Sticky Toffee Pudding.

Favourite drinks? A refreshing 50/50 mix of orange and apple juice — and when it comes to something stronger, only a good quality Scotch whisky will do!

Let's see if you've ran further than Simon.. leave your top mileage in the comments!

Amazing body fact: What is the “Funny Bone”?

Ever knocked your elbow and felt that weird, tingly zap? That’s not actually a bone - it’s your ulnar nerve getting bumped!

The “funny bone” is a spot near your elbow where this nerve runs close to the skin, right by the humerus (yep, the bone that sounds like “humorous” - pun intended!).

When you hit it, the nerve gets squished against the bone, sending a strange, electric sensation down your arm - usually into your ring and little fingers.

So why is it called the “funny bone”?
- Because the feeling is funny-strange, not funny-ha-ha...
- And because it’s next to the humerus - get it? 😄

Next time you bump it, you’ll know exactly what’s going on under the skin!

Meet the Team: Danii Shields

Better Health & Communities Manager

"Why do I love my job?"

There’s no better feeling than ending the day knowing you’ve helped someone reach a goal — and often, those goals are things many take for granted, like walking upstairs to sleep in their own bed. It’s a feeling like no other.

I get the opportunity to create opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to be active in ways that suit them — right in their local leisure facilities. Every day, I work alongside an incredible team who make it all happen and they are real life hero's.

When I’m not working, you’ll find me out in the fells — walking, running, or camping - usually somewhere in the Lakes!

Where's your favourite spot in the Lake District? Let us know in the comments

💦 Myth #9: Sweating removes toxins from your body

Sweat is mostly water and salt. The best way to detox is to focus on balanced health and nutrition.

Wheels for All Pedal Away group started this week with a gentle-paced spin round to Natland and back down Burton Rd cycle path.
There were lots of slippery leaves on the paths, but we avoided all mishaps and all enjoyed the ride.
The Pedal Away group will meet at 10am for each of the next 3 Wednesdays. If you would like to join a gentle supported ride, please join us starting at Kendal Leisure Centre.
