Iโ€™ve been working with Sinead over 7 months helping her prepare in the build up to her competing in the Ironman Barcelona event. Sinead completed a gruelling 3.8km swim, followed by 180km on the bike and finished off with a 42.4km full distance marathon! Such an amazing achievement Sinead, congratulations ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘!

This week I worked with a lady who was struggling with neck and shoulder pain. She spends a lot of time sat working at a desk and is also a very active cyclist. These activities are contributing to bad postural habits and increased pain and tension in the neck and shoulder area, caused by the rounding of shoulders and the muscular imbalance this creates. After just one session she has reported a huge difference, and it is great to be able to share such positive feedback! Thanks ๐Ÿ˜Š

Easy stretches for head and neck stiffness and painโ€ฆ.

๐ŸŒŸ Neck and head turn - focus straight ahead with your arms by your side and your chin up, turn your head to the right side and hold for 20-30 seconds then slowly turn your head back to centre before repeating on the other side). Repeat 2-3 times.

๐ŸŒŸ Side neck tilt - tilt head to the side and hold with the opposite hand. Maintain for 20-30 seconds. Repeat 2-3 times on each side.

3. Reduced muscle soreness post exercise
4. Reduced back pain

Sitting (particularly desk work), driving, mobile phone use, standing and lifting are all things that can contribute to aches and pains from poor posture. Consider your posture under these circumstances, small changes can often make a big difference!

For desk work, the image below shows a few general tips you could try. Also make sure you include regular breaks and stretches-the body can only tolerate the same position for so long!

A note on postureโ€ฆ.

Posture is the position in which you hold yourself whilst standing, sitting or lying down. To show good posture you should have a neutral spine. This means that your muscle groups, joints, and ligaments are aligned in such a way that places them under minimal strain. This in turn helps your body stay flexible, reduces fatigue, and helps maintain your balance.

If your posture is out of alignment it can contribute to neck and back pain, strains and injuries.

Sports massage can help improve posture by increasing range of movement and reducing stiffness. Before each new treatment a posture assessment is undertaken to guide your treatment and to be able to provide you with exercises and advice specific to your posture at the end of the session to help improve your symptoms, not only after the treatment but also to help long term.
