Westmorland and Furness Council is committed to advancing race equality and fostering an inclusive culture where everyone feels valued and empowered.

Central to this commitment is the Council’s internal Race Equality Network, which provides a safe and supportive space for colleagues to share experiences, raise awareness, and work together to challenge racial inequities. By promoting inclusion, celebrating diversity, and advocating for race equality, the network helps create a workplace and community where all individuals can thrive.

In addition to the network, the Council offers year-round Race equality training that addresses the challenging realities of racial equality in the workplace.

The two-module course has been developed with guidance from the Centre for Inclusive Leadership, input from Learning Pool’s Black employees, their friends and family. By incorporating these perspectives, the training ensures that discussions are authentic, grounded, and representative of real experiences.

As part of 2026, the Council will be sharing ā€˜Lunch and Learn’ discussions, providing colleagues with the opportunity to learn from meaningful conversations about race equality and explore how the organisation can drive real, lasting change.

These initiatives reflect the Council’s belief that and demonstrate a practical, ongoing commitment to addressing race equality at every level.

03/02/2026

As one of the founding members of the Anchor Anti-racism Group, the university continues to engage in conversation and action relating to anti-racism and race equity across multiple channels. This year’s theme of aligns with our University Inclusivity Statement (hosted at https://www.cumbria.ac.uk/about/equality-diversity-and-inclusion/), which acknowledges the shared social responsibility we have to enable an inclusive environment for our community.

Some examples of past and ongoing University of Cumbria action include:

- ā€ŽCreation of an anti-racist reading list, hosted at https://my.cumbria.ac.uk/Student-Life/Learning/Resources/Reading-for-You/, which is promoted to our staff and students throughout the year

- ā€ŽSupporting staff to diversify learning and teaching through the ā€˜Diversifying Reading Lists Toolkit’ created by the Library and a workshop run by Learning and Teaching Enhancement dedicated on decolonising the curriculum.

- Promotion of Union Black training to our staff and students, whilst it was live

- Our staff network, ā€˜R’EACH (ā€˜Race’, Ethnicity and Cultural Heritage) have contributed to numerous institutional developments, such as our Equality Objectives 2025-29 and the Anchor Anti-racism Group’s hate crime reporting flowchart

- Embedded race equity within our Equality Objectives 2025-29, as hosted at https://www.cumbria.ac.uk/about/equality-diversity-and-inclusion/equality-data-and-reports/ with monitoring via our Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Wellbeing Committee

- The keynote and workshops included a race-related intersectional focus at our 2025 Institute of Health EDI Conference

- Sponsorship of the 2025 Anti Racist Cumbria summit

- Played a key role in the development and release of the Anchor Collaborative’s Hate Crime Reporting Flowchart, which can be viewed at https://my.cumbria.ac.uk/Student-Life/Healthy-Relationships-Hub/Information-Pages/I-have-been-affected-by-a-Hate-Crime-andor-Hate-Incident/

- Development of a Draft Race Equity Action Plan to set out institutional priorities up until 2030, with an aim to launch in early 2026.

These initiatives reflect ongoing work, not an endpoint. During Race Equality Week and beyond, we remain committed to turning dialogue into action and embedding race equity across everything we do.

The Anti-Racism Anchor Group is reaffirming the collective message as part of Race Equality Week - that racism has no place in our society and will not be tolerated in any form.

We want communities to feel safe, respected and valued in all aspects of education, work and life, across our Anchor organisations and within society.

During 2026 (2 - 8 February), we will be sharing examples of action being taken by Anchor organisations to align with this year’s theme of
