Our Running Analysis sessions look at you running in the real world and get to the root causes of running injuries.

After which, Gina was able to diagnose and share where I am with my running, but also my general posture and flexibility. Back pain is not pleasant but is often simple to fix. Lower back pain is often caused by weakness in the muscles around the lower back.

The best way to avoid back pain is to make sure these muscles remain strong. It is easier said than done in a world where we spend more time sitting than standing.

If you are desk based, try to get a wobble cushion and place it on your work chair. These are inexpensive and make the deep muscles of the spine work while you are sitting.

An exercise ball is another great tool to help you keep your lower back strong, get a ball and sit on it when you work, watch the TV or even at the dinner table!

Knee pain needs a holistic approach as often the pain is not coming from the knee itself. In the vast majority of cases we actually find the feet to be responsible for knee pain! Weak feet, cause the knee to take forces in a way it wasn't designed to do, leading to pain, weakness and instability.

As autumn approaches, runners eagerly anticipate the cooler weather and picturesque landscapes that make this season perfect for outdoor activities.

However, with the change in weather and terrain, it’s important to adapt your Autumn Running routine to avoid injuries.

πŸ‘‰ Warm up - Take longer to warm up with a brisk walk followed by a light jog, before getting into your full stride. This will help to warm the muscles and joints and help avoid injury.

πŸ‘‰ Dynamic stretching has a place in your warm up routine. Leg swings etc can help the fluid in the joints to warm up and help lubricate your joint surfaces.

πŸ‘‰ Use of compression garments isn't ideal even though it is cold, they compress the leg and therefore limit blood flow. When you run you need fast blood flow the muscles. Compression garments are designed for post work out recovery and can be very effective.

πŸ‘‰ Don't forget a proper cool down and post run stretch, to help your muscles return to their pre exercise length.

Back pain is tricky, millions of people struggle with it and it is one of the leading causes of time off work. So how do we resolve back pain?

Generally back pain is caused by weak muscles deep within the spine and pelvis. If anyone has told you that your pelvis is "out" or you have one leg longer than another, this could be the cause of your back pain.

The "core" muscles are a group of muscles that are integral to holding your pelvis in the correct position. If these are weak, from too much sitting, it can cause the pelvis to drift out of an optimum position and this can cause pain.

To solve back pain, for the long term, you need to strengthen the muscles that are holding it in the correct position. If you need help with this, give us a call. πŸ“žWe can assess your spinal position and create specific exercises to help you strengthen then.

The weather is warming up and it is important to stay hydrated. But will how you hold your water bottle will affect you when you run.

Water bottles are heavy, a small 500ml one is equivalent to holding a 0.5kg weight in your hand, a 1 ltr bottle will be similar to holding a 1kg weight.

Imagine grabbing a 1kg weight in one hand only and heading out for a run, it will affect the weight going down only one side of your body! This can lead to joint pains on that side, a twisting of the pelvis as your body adapts. You are less likely to rotate your torso while you hold your water, leading to the SI joint to stop moving and affecting your efficiencies.

If you are only going a short distance, you really don't need water. Hydrate pre and post run, your body is designed to cope with this. For longer runs? Try the water packs that you wear like a back pack, it will centralise the load and ensure you can remain running efficiently.
