🎤EXPERT PANEL DISCUSSION: Off-grid solar and carbon finance.

The industry is creating valuable carbon reductions by displacing kerosene, petrol and diesel. But there are significant barriers to accessing finance through the Voluntary Carbon Market.

Our CEO Patrick Lagrange will be sharing his experience of spearheading Namene’s successful solar light carbon projects, among the very first in the sector to do so.

Patrick will be taking part in an expert-led, interactive roundtable alongside representatives from , The Rockefeller Foundation, and GOGLA.

Patrick will be offering his insights into the realities of off-grid solar carbon projects, discussing the measures needed to increase carbon credits for the sector, and unlock funding flows.

🇳🇦 IMPACT STORY

Esra Hangula lives in Goreangab, an informal settlement on the outskirts of Windhoek, Namibia’s capital. In this remote area, disconnected from basic services, Esra's home has limited access to water, sanitation, and no electricity.

As an 11th-grade student, this severely impacted his home life and studies, crucial for his future. Until recently, his family relied on candles for light, which were expensive, disposable, and posed a constant fire risk.

When Esra purchased a highly-subsidised Namene solar light, everything changed. ✨

"The benefits this light has brought to me and my family are incredible,” he shares. “I can now study late into the night, and it has cut costs since we no longer buy candles daily. Plus, it’s safe—unlike candles, which can cause fires."

The solar light is now a daily essential in their household, used not just for studying but to illuminate the kitchen and other parts of the home.

Our lights are often used by students to improve their education, helping them work towards a brighter future.

But most of our rural customers can only afford these lights through carbon subsidies or donations from corporates and NGOs.

📚Partnering with Namene to donate or sponsor solar lights can have a powerful impact on young learners' lives while enhancing your brand’s social responsibility.

🇳🇦 CARBON PROJECT NEWS

✅ Our carbon project in has reached an exciting milestone, with 11,664 Verified Emission Reductions (VERs) issued by .

Each VER represents a tonne of carbon dioxide emissions avoided by our solar lights, and their collective impact is significant.

📈 So far, families have saved $19.7 million on kerosene and candles for lighting, and 768,994 Namibians now have access to clean solar lighting—over 65% of the entire population!

As the only Gold Standard-certified project in Namibia, our groundbreaking work has introduced affordable off-grid solar products at scale in rural communities for the first time.

🔆 We use the carbon-saving power of our solar lights to subsidize them through carbon finance, making them truly affordable for those who need energy access the most.

⚡Without power to charge our devices, even the most basic tasks can become unthinkably difficult, and some of the most important day-to-day activities become impossible.

🇳🇦This is what new mother Ester from Omusati region of Namibia discovered in June 2022 when she prematurely gave birth to her baby.

After she was discharged from the hospital she tried to contact her mother who was living in her hometown, a village called Onadjila in Namibia’s rural north where little development or modern infrastructure exists.

“By the time I left the hospital I didn’t know how to take care of my baby,” says Ester. “I wanted to speak to my mother to ask her advice but I could only speak to her twice a month when she travelled the long distance to town to charge her phone.”

“It was difficult for me because I could not talk to her, I wanted to ask her questions on how to take care or the baby, when to start bathing the baby, what to do when the baby was sick, I was overwhelmed with a lot of emotions because I could not talk to my mother every day and ask for advice and learn from her experience, I had to wait for her to go to town to charge her phone so I talk to her.”

🔋 📲 When Namene released the Zafi solar charging panel, everything changed for Ester.

“I bought a Zafi charger for my mother and sent it to her at the village. Ever since I can talk to her everyday on how to take care of the baby. She even looks after my son in the village sometimes and she can talk to me everyday and tell me of how he is doing so I don’t worry.”

The struggle to connect and keep in regular contact with close family is a daily reality for many Namibians from rural areas. That's why we designed the Zafi charger, to provide an affordable, quality product that keeps families like Ester’s connected at all times.

This London Climate Action Week we're shining a light on our carbon projects and how high-quality data can support climate action.

🌍 We know that high-integrity carbon credits must be CREDIBLE.

That’s why we have deployed meticulous digital monitoring for every light we have distributed under our carbon projects.

This helps us ensure high-quality standards for our projects, and prove our solar lights are being used to avoid carbon emissions from the day they are delivered to customers.

☀️To date, 600,000 Namene solar lights have been distributed to rural households in 4 provinces of Zambia.

⭕ These lights have generated 27,318 carbon credits - each representing a tonne of CO₂ avoided.

📱 Each light was tracked using a digital reporting tool providing transparent and efficient tracking of distribution 27,318 tonnes of CO2 by displacing fossil fuels and transformed daily life for over a million Zambians.

💾 Data is collected including the date and time of distribution, geographic location, and name of the solar light owner.

🛠️ We have trained dedicated community agents who currently monitor the distribution of the lights, conduct customer surveys to ensure their lights are still in use, and repair them if they are damaged.

We’re thrilled to see our collaboration with in their project spotlight.

🔆🌍 Our solar lighting project in Zambia makes solar lighting affordable to families and replaces polluting homemade kerosene lamps and candles.

Through this project we are supporting several Sustainable Development Goals and directly empowering families and communities.

🎯 These include:

📈 SDG 1: No Poverty – Families in Zambia save on average $25 per year and cumulatively have already saved $9.2m US Dollars. The lights also unlock extra study hours for children, which helps break the cycle of poverty.

💡SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy – The project makes solar lighting truly affordable and accessible to over 400,000 families in Zambia. Every carbon credit purchased results in around six families getting first-time access to clean and safe energy.

🌳SDG 13: Climate Action – Each light avoids at least 92kg carbon emissions a year. In Zambia alone, over 10,000 tonnes of CO2 have been avoided to date through the project.

Our Gold Standard-certified projects, have already deployed over 1.2 million solar lights in serval African countries since 2021. Over 720,000 f these are in Zambia, where 86% of the rural population do not have access to electricity and most live below the international extreme poverty line.

You can support our project and supercharge access to solar energy by purchasing our carbon credits on the Gold Standard Marketplace.

Your purchase not only contributes to protecting the planet, but makes a meaningful difference to off-grid families quality of life.
