Grief is a journey that takes time - and the circumstances around the death of a loved one or loved ones has a great impact on the intensity and length of feelings of loss.

My parents both died within a year of each other. Sometimes I think of them every day and other times I don’t.

I am a funeral director and celebrant, not a therapist. Working with people who are grieving has taught me a lot about life, love and the amazing connections we hold with one another.

What I do know is the importance of having a farewell that is meaningful and thoughtful. Every family I’ve ever worked with had their own unique way of saying their goodbye.

If you are grieving - be gentle with yourself. It takes time to find a new normal, and grief feels different to everyone.

Have you heard of natural burials?

Today I wanted to talk about natural burials – which are environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional burials.

This is where the body is laid to rest in a biodegradable coffin or shroud - in a site that is managed to create or preserve habitats for wildlife.

These burial grounds are often in woodlands, meadows, or orchards - designed to create a living, breathing legacy - without traditional headstones or manicured lawns.

Around the UK there are about 270 sites - which include dedicated natural grounds - as well as woodland burial areas in traditional cemeteries.

In Kent we have 7 of these with further ones opening soon.

If you’re interested in finding out more - please contact me.

Last week I had the privilege of helping organise a funeral for Martha.

Working with Martha's family and the pastors at the Kingsway International Christian Centre (KICC) – which is based at Prayer City in Buckmore Park - on a 24-acre site between Maidstone and Chatham.

We held a lovely ceremony for Martha which was then followed by her burial in Strood Cemetery. This was my first visit to Prayer City and - as well as the warmth that everyone received - and the very welcoming atmosphere.

I was truly amazed by its size - where they're able to hold services and ceremonies for up to five and a half thousand people.

Thank you for listening.

Christmas is a particularly difficult time if you have lost someone.

I think lots of us would agree that it doesn’t necessarily matter if it’s the first Christmas or the 10th; we will still think of our loved one and miss them deeply.

There are several ways we can honour our loved ones at Christmas that can bring comfort. I thought I’d share some that are particularly touching.

🪑Setting a place of them at the dinner table
🕯Lighting a candle for them on Christmas Eve
💐Visiting their grave or memorial with flowers on Boxing Day
🎆Fireworks
📸Adding a framed photograph of them as part of your Christmas decorations
📖Taking some time to share stories about them and their life with friends or family

I hope you all enjoy a peaceful Christmas in a way that is special to you, Toby.

When I am helping a family organise a funeral, I often suggest filling in the grave as an option.

Filling in the grave is a deeply personal, symbolic, final act of love. Many families find it comforting as they say goodbye.

When the coffin has been lowered into the ground, some people choose to scatter handfuls of earth onto the coffin, (you may have seen or experienced this at past funerals).

It can be particularly moving for the family or close friends to do something “physical” that represents their respect and admiration of the person who has died. One could say that it helps to express a portion of the emotion from the day. It brings a kind of relief.

I hope you are having a peaceful day, Toby.

Hello, I’m Toby from Simple Kent Funerals.

This is a lovely quote - that Angela told her family she’s like included in the printed service sheet - that accompanied her thanksgiving service.

"Laugh - be yourself - be flamboyant - don’t worry about other people’s opinions – get angry – whatever you do, always give it a good go – don’t take yourself too seriously – never give up – love with all your heart."

I think the most important thing is that – whatever the ceremony – it’s personal and captures the essence.

Thanks for listening.
