Tips for treating Athletes foot-

Athletes foot can be an itchy and uncomfortable reality for many. Athletes foot, known medically as tinea pedis, is a fungal infection that thrives warm, moist environment.

Top tips -

* Morning ritual. After a shower, pat your feet thoroughly dry, focusing on the spaces between your toes. Then use a foot powder to keep any lingering moisture at bay. This simple step each morning can make a huge difference in keeping your feet dry and less hospitable to fungi.

* Evening care. At night, give your feet a chance to breathe. Once your free from the confines of your shoes and socks, apply an antifungal cream to the affected areas. This targeted approach helps kill the fungus and provides relief from the itchiness and discomfort.

* Extra measures. Remember to let your shoes air and sanitise them regularly. Change your socks daily. (Ideally bamboo sicks).

By incorporating these simple steps into your daily routine, you will not only treat Athletes foot, but also prevent it from making an unwelcome return.

How to treat cracked heels

Cracked heels, also known as fissures, can be a nuisance but can occasionally lead to more serious problems if left untreated. Treat them by giving your feet a little more attention, beginning with moisturizing them at least twice a day.

Give your heels extra attention before going to bed: Soak your feet for about 10 minutes in plain or soapy water and pat dry. Apply cream to your feet before you go to bed. Once every two weeks gently rub your heels with a loofah or foot scrubber to help remove dead skin. Apply a heavier, oil-based cream or petroleum jelly (Vaseline), then slip on a pair of thin cotton socks at bedtime to help the moisturizer work.

Donโ€™t ignore dry, cracked heels, as over time you may develop deeper fissures, which increases your risk of infection. If self-care measures donโ€™t help, try to locate a foot health practitioner or podiatrist in your local area.

What is pitted keratolysis?

Pitted keratolysis, is a superficial bacterial skin infection characterised by crater-like pits and malodour. It typically affects pressure-bearing areas on the soles of the feet.

This condition is very treatable with a good prognosis.

Who gets pitted keratolysis?

Pitted keratolysis is more commonly seen in men compared to women and can affect all age groups.

Factors that increase the risk of developing pitted keratolysis include:

Hyperhidrosis โ€” excessive sweating of the hands and feet
Keratoderma โ€” thickened skin of palms and soles
Prolonged use of occlusive footwear
Diabetes
Poor foot hygiene
Hot humid weather
Obesity
Immunodeficiency.

What is the treatment for pitted keratolysis?

Pitted keratolysis can be treated successfully with adequate foot hygiene, topical antibiotics, and antiseptics.

General measures

Ensure adequate foot hygiene:
Avoid prolonged use of occlusive footwear
Wear properly fitted footwear to reduce foot friction
Wear absorbent cotton socks and ensure frequent changing of socks
Wash socks after wear at 60ยฐC with soap and water to eliminate bacteria
Wash feet with soap or antiseptic cleanser twice a day
Apply antiperspirant to the feet regularly
Avoid sharing footwear with others.
Rotate dry insoles on a daily basis so feet are never standing on damp shoe inners
Manage underlying hyperhidrosis.

๐Ÿ‘ฃSpecific measures may include:

Topical antibiotics

Commonly used options applied twice daily, usually for 2โ€“4 weeks are:
Clindamycin
Erythromycin
Mupirocin
Fusidic acid.
Other agents

Antimicrobial with keratolytic properties
Can be used alone or in combination with other topical antibiotics
