Please do not visit if you have flu symptoms, vomiting or diarrhoea.

If you need medical advice and aren't sure which is the right service, contact NHS 111 online or by phone.

Norovirus is a stomach bug that causes diarrhoea and vomiting. It can be very unpleasant, but usually goes away in about 2 days.

You can usually treat yourself at home, but the most important thing is to rest and have lots of fluids.

A community poster competition for children and teenagers is being run by the Shared Decision Making Council on Skylark Ward to help highlight the dangers of va**ng.

Anyone aged up to 18 can take part in the competition– whether in hospital or in the community – and win prizes of a hamper or vouchers.

They need to design an entry and send it to the play team at Skylark Ward at KGH by email at kgh-tr.playteam@nhs.net or a hard copy to the ward play team. Entries need to be in by January 31, 2026.

The aim is to encourage greater awareness of the risks of va**ng among young people in Northamptonshire at a time when the popularity of the habit is rising – even though it is illegal to sell ni****ne va**ng products to anyone under 18 or for adults to buy them on behalf of under-18s.

Research by the NHS has shown quarter of 11 to 15-year-olds have tried va**ng and nearly 1 in 10 (9%) do it frequently.

Can you help with research into stigma associated with prostate cancer testing amongst black men?

Our research team is looking to contact black men and their families to find more about the stigma associated with prostate cancer, why this is the case, and what would change people’s minds.

The hospital is supporting phase 1 of the national study led by Dr Olufikayo Bamidele at the Hull York Medical School. It aims to carry out interviews and surveys with volunteers to include black men with prostate cancer, their partners and immediate families, and black men over 40 without prostate cancer.

For the purposes of the study black ethnicity is described as self-identified by men, within the UK census categories Black African, Black Caribbean, Black British, Black Welsh or Black other.

💙 Can you help improve prostate cancer awareness and care for Black men?

KGH is supporting important research to understand 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗺𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘀.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men and affects 1 in 4 Black men in the UK. Early diagnosis can save lives, but stigma and fear can stop people from seeking help.

The research team would like to hear from:
• Black men with prostate cancer
• Black men aged 40+ without prostate cancer
• Partners and close family members

Cold weather continues to affect many parts of the UK, and it can have a serious impact on health, particularly for older people, babies and those with long-term conditions.

Like hospitals across the NHS, our teams at University Hospitals of Northamptonshire are experiencing increased demand this winter, with more patients needing urgent care.

You can help protect yourself and others by:
• Keeping your home warm
• Taking medicines as prescribed
• Seeking advice early from NHS 111 or your GP
• Using A&E for life-threatening emergencies only

Acting early and using the right NHS service helps keep people well and supports our teams to care for those who need urgent hospital treatment. 💙

Feeling the cold? Here’s how to stay warm and protect your health this winter ❄️

Cold weather can increase your risk of colds, flu and more serious issues like pneumonia, heart attacks and strokes if you don’t keep warm, especially if you’re older or have a health condition.

Top tips to stay warm:
• Heat the rooms you use most. Aim for at least 18 °C if you can.
• Keep bedroom windows closed at night.
• Wear several layers of clothing rather than one thick layer.
• Have hot meals and drinks regularly.
• Reduce draughts by closing curtains at dusk and blocking gaps around doors.

With Storm Goretti and difficult weather conditions expected, patient transport services may experience delays or disruption.

If you can safely do so, we kindly ask families and carers to help transport loved ones home from hospital ahead of the worst of the weather, where discharge has already been agreed by the clinical team.

This will help ensure patients get home safely and reduce pressure on transport services during the storm.

Please speak to ward staff if you have any questions.

Thank you for your understanding and support in helping us keep everyone safe. 💙

Cold Weather Alert

Severe cold weather can be dangerous, especially for young children, the elderly, or those with chronic health conditions. With reports of severe snow and ice hitting the region tomorrow you can find advice on the NHS website https://prepare.campaign.gov.uk/be-informed-about-hazards/cold-weather-snow-ice/?fbclid=IwY2xjawPLXApleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETF6dWM2VzM3eUNvVTNCS2xwc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHuwLab7QUbWXqOP5I4RhZAH4GwW8mxIOaC4UXqlYNCRjAZa97Uz1_2Mej3AH_aem_-hJQYzILww9tq05Csw3EMg on how to stay safe and look after yourself.

Make sure you stay warm. If you go outside, dress appropriately. When indoors, keep your heating set to the right temperature. Maintaining at least 18°C in the winter poses minimal health risks when you are properly dressed. If you know someone who might be at special risk, such as an older person living alone, ensure they know how to stay warm and are well stocked with food and medications.

If you are concerned about your health or that of someone you know, please call NHS 111.
