💻 Can I train via distance learning?

Counselling training varies widely, and while online or distance learning can support CPD, foundational counselling training must be relational and experiential.

At NCCS, we believe this cannot be achieved without live, synchronous teaching and assessed skills practice.

👩‍🏫 All CPCAB-accredited NCCS courses include these essential elements to ensure you build real counselling competence.

📋 Professional bodies such as BACP and NCPS, regulated under the Professional Standards Authority, require live teaching as part of approved training routes. Asynchronous-only courses without interaction, feedback, or skills practice do not meet the criteria for professional membership or future accreditation.

🎓 I have a psychology degree — does this count as recognised prior learning?

❌ No. While psychology degrees and counselling training may share some theoretical overlap, they are fundamentally different pathways.

📘 Psychology degrees are academically focused, with an emphasis on theory, research, and scientific understanding of human behaviour.
🤝 Counselling training is relational and experiential, focusing on personal development, self-awareness, and core interpersonal skills such as empathy, diversity awareness, and building trust.

These essential counselling skills are typically not taught or formally assessed within psychology programmes and must be developed through supervised, practical, skills-based training.

❓ Do I have to start at Level 2?

Not necessarily. If you’ve already completed counselling training with another awarding body, we can assess your prior learning based on guided learning hours (GLH), course content, and observed skills practice.

📚 To access Level 3, you’ll need at least 90 GLH with live teaching (this can be delivered online) and regular tutor-observed practice.
🎓 For Level 4, you’ll need at least 180 GLH under the same conditions.

⚠️ Please note: courses must closely align with CPCAB standards, and distance learning without live teaching and practical assessment CANNOT be accepted.

Course information is now available for the CPCAB Level 3 and CPCAB NCPS accredited Level 4 course starting in September 2026 and the CPCAB Level 2 course starting in January 2027. We will be accepting applications from 1st February but you can get started on them now by going to the website and creating an account - click the little person icon at the top of the page. Once you have created an account you will have access to the application form and don’t forget to complete the written exercise relevant to the course you are applying for.
