This week I want to talk about corns. Corns are small lumps of hard skin. They are caused by pressure or rubbing of the skin. Which could be caused by the wrong sized shoes, heels. It could also be cause by the seams of your socks or just an irritation in the show itself.

There are corn plasters for sale which will relieve the pressure. However, try to avoid cornplasters that are medicated. This will cause skin issues around the corn itself, you just need felted plasters.

To prevent the hard skin building up in the first place, you can use a pumice stone on the area and you can moisture the foot. Never use something like a razor blade to remove the corn, as you may cause injury to yourself. Please seek help from a professional like myself.

As we get older, it’s very important to pay attention to our feet with regards to foot hygiene, nail cutting and the types of shoes we wear.

Your nails should be attended to on a regular basis. The nails of the elderly are usually quite thick. Therefore, it’s best to do nail cutting after a bath. You should follow the length and shape of the toe to minimise damage to the nail.

If you’re finding it difficult to get to your toenails to cut them or if you have thick nails due to a fungal nail infection then you should contact a professional. That is the best way to avoid hurting yourself.

So if you’re in the Northamptonshire area and would like to see a professional. Drop us a message on Facebook, Instagram. You could even email or text us. Then we can get you booked in 🙌🏼💜

This post is to show the importance of footcare by a professional for people with diabetes.

Diabetes can lead to nerve damage in the feet and legs resulting in a loss of sensation, pins and needles or possible numbness and burning sensations. This is called neuropathy.

A reduced blood supply to the feet and legs resulting in cold painful feet.

All this means that injuries that may occur to the feet may go unnoticed. By having regular treatment every 6 -8 weeks by a professional, any change in the feet will get noticed and treated. Unfortunately, diabetes causes the body to be slow to heal and can quickly cause infection.

If you have diabetes here are some things for you to do to avoid injury.

1. Wash you feet daily and dry your feet thoroughly.

2. Have proper fitted shoes to avoid corns and calluses and check inside your shoes for anything that will irritate your skin.

3. Avoid walking bare foot inside or outside.

4. Prevent dry skin by applying moisturising cream but not inbetween your toes.

5. To avoid injury from cutting toenails incorrectly consult a professional.
