I moved to Keynsham from Knowle West in Bristol aged three, when my parents were fortunate enough to be eligible for a council house. I have lived here ever since. Growing up in Dunster Road was a very happy time – the Park Estate was essentially a building site for many years, which naturally became our playground. I’m still friends with so many people from that wonderful time. I met my wife Mary at the youth club and we married at Queen’s Road – 54 years ago!
Although I never learned to play an instrument properly, music has always been an important aspect in my life. For me, the Music Festival epitomises all that is so special about Keynsham. It’s run completely by a team of volunteers and involves the whole town coming together to make it happen.
The Trustees, Town Council, local businesses, community groups and so many volunteers - all working together to put on what is now the largest event of its kind in the southwest. It’s quite remarkable.
As well as the amazing quality and variety of entertainment we put on every year, we don’t often talk about some of the other, equally important, benefits that the festival provides. We provide the opportunity for community groups to raise much needed funds for their own organisations; we host a dedicated Youth Arts Festival (Kaleidoscope) in partnership with TimeOut Youth Services; we run a special event, outside of the normal festival times, for those people living with dementia so that they too can experience the festival atmosphere in a safe environment.
All these activities wouldn’t be possible without the public’s generous donations – so, my heartfelt thanks for enabling us to provide this very important programme.
When not working on the Music Festival, I am a keen and I started doing a weekly art class a few years ago. I have recently been introduced to oil paints and am trying to become more proficient in this challenging medium. I am certainly no Rembrandt, but that’s not the point, is it?
Please do stop me and say hello at any time during the festival – I’d love to hear your feedback and, any ideas.
