My name is Richard Hopkins and I am the founder of the Keynsham Coffee Run, which runs from The duck pond in Keynsham Memorial Park every Saturday morning at 730am. This forms part of the wider Keynsham Running Group, which is an active group of runners in Keynsham who use it as a vehicle to connect with each other, share routes, join each other on runs we also throw in the odd social. It's a thriving community one I am very proud of. I am a late starter to running, but I am proof you can start at any age and use this to positively encourage anyone to start.

I live in Keynsham and have done for all my 45 years. I was born in Keynsham Hospital, went to Temple Street Infants, Bath Hill Juniors and then Wellsway School. I am married to the long suffering Amie and have 2 kids Faye and Zack who both attend Wellsway School. After a long corporate banking career which I left earlier this year, I now work for the local authority of which I am massively enjoying. I feel really connected to the area I am familiar with and absolutely love.

Keynsham is an absolutely brilliant place to live, I feel privileged to have grown up here. I'm always heartened to see the community working together to establish new groups and forge new friendships. It's a beautifully positioned town that allows you to go to the "Bright lights" of Bath or Bristol and return to the calmness of the town. It's also a good place to access the countryside around us and I'm often found running out to the villages of Publow and Pensford and up to Kelston Roundhill. Not sure my kids like walking down the High Street with me though, as I often stop and have a chat with loads of people and it can take longer than it really should.

When I am not running, I am probably volunteering or supporting another cause. I support the Keynsham Active Travel Group to promote sustainable travel methods within the town and trying to get the right support to connect the town with safe footpaths on Charlton Road to Queen Charlton. I have an allotment and I'm the Treasurer of the local skittle league, so plenty of things to keep me busy.

I moved to Keynsham from Knowle West in Bristol aged three, when my parents were fortunate enough to be eligible for a council house. I have lived here ever since. Growing up in Dunster Road was a very happy time – the Park Estate was essentially a building site for many years, which naturally became our playground. I’m still friends with so many people from that wonderful time. I met my wife Mary at the youth club and we married at Queen’s Road – 54 years ago!

Although I never learned to play an instrument properly, music has always been an important aspect in my life. For me, the Music Festival epitomises all that is so special about Keynsham. It’s run completely by a team of volunteers and involves the whole town coming together to make it happen.

The Trustees, Town Council, local businesses, community groups and so many volunteers - all working together to put on what is now the largest event of its kind in the southwest. It’s quite remarkable.
As well as the amazing quality and variety of entertainment we put on every year, we don’t often talk about some of the other, equally important, benefits that the festival provides. We provide the opportunity for community groups to raise much needed funds for their own organisations; we host a dedicated Youth Arts Festival (Kaleidoscope) in partnership with TimeOut Youth Services; we run a special event, outside of the normal festival times, for those people living with dementia so that they too can experience the festival atmosphere in a safe environment.

All these activities wouldn’t be possible without the public’s generous donations – so, my heartfelt thanks for enabling us to provide this very important programme.

When not working on the Music Festival, I am a keen and I started doing a weekly art class a few years ago. I have recently been introduced to oil paints and am trying to become more proficient in this challenging medium. I am certainly no Rembrandt, but that’s not the point, is it?

Please do stop me and say hello at any time during the festival – I’d love to hear your feedback and, any ideas.

Important changes to rehearsal bookings at Stage 2 Studios:

One of the most common things we hear from our customers is that they have trouble booking in rehearsal sessions because we always seem to be full on certain evenings. This is mainly due to the number of bands we have with recurring / block bookings.

The problem with this is it puts potential new customers off from wanting to try our space, and when the customers with a block booking cancels, it's almost impossible for us to fill that space. This week alone we have had 6 cancellations and/or no-shows. This is crippling for our business and it simply can't continue. With the huge rises in bills, rent and wages, it actually costs US money to stay open when there is only one band in the studio! It would literally be cheaper for us to close.

So we need to change this in a way that benefits everyone.

Bookings can now only be made up to a maximum of 31 days in advance, up to a maximum of 4 bookings at any one time per customer/band. If you wish to make a booking further ahead than that, or above the maximum of 4, you must do so by calling the studio on 01225 425592 and paying for the session(s) in full in advance. This is non refundable. This is the only way we can make sure that our diary is open to everyone and gives everyone a fair chance of getting a slot. It also protects our business.

For those bands with block/recurring/multiple bookings, you will now need to give 14 days notice of any cancellations/changes, otherwise we will regrettable still have to charge you for the session.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. We are making these changes to hopefully preserve our rehearsal facilities for the future. Sadly, if things don't improve very soon we will have to reconsider the entire rehearsal aspect of our business.

Regards
Dan
