❄️🥦🍹 Know Which Medicines Interact with Food & Drink 🍹🥦❄️
With Christmas food, drinks, and celebrations in full swing, it’s worth remembering that some foods and drinks can interact with medicines.
The best place to check is always the Patient Information Leaflet that comes with your medication. You can always ask your pharmacist or GP for advice.
Here are a few common and important interactions to keep in mind:
🔴 Cranberry Products
Popular at Christmas, but avoid if you’re taking warfarin (used to prevent and treat blood clots). Cranberry products may increase the risk of bruising or bleeding.
🟢 Christmas Greens
Foods like Brussels sprouts, broccoli, and leafy greens are high in vitamin K, which affects blood clotting. If you’re on Warfarin, vitamin K can reduce how well it works. You don’t need to avoid these foods; just aim for consistent amounts to help keep blood test results stable.
🍷 Alcohol
Alcohol can interact with many medicines and may worsen side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, or nausea, especially with some antibiotics and pain medicines. Always check if alcohol is safe with your medication.
🍊 Grapefruit Juice
Grapefruit can interfere with how some medicines are broken down in the body, including certain statins and cancer treatments, increasing the risk of side effects.
