💛 Endometriosis Awareness Month 💛

This month is also Endometriosis Awareness Month, helping to raise understanding of a condition that affects around 1 in 10 women and people assigned female at birth.

Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows outside of the uterus. It can cause a range of symptoms, including:

🟡 Painful, heavy or irregular periods
🟡 Pelvic pain outside of periods
🟡 Pain during or after s*x
🟡 Pain when going to the toilet
🟡 Bloating (endo belly)
🟡 Fatigue
🟡 Difficulty getting pregnant

Many people live with symptoms for years before receiving a diagnosis. Severe period pain is not something you should feel you have to “just put up with".

If pain or other symptoms are affecting your daily life, work, education or relationships, please speak with your GP.

Today marks the beginning of Endometriosis Action Month. This year, our theme is ‘Endometriosis Doesn’t Wait’. Endometriosis doesn’t wait whilst you’re trying to get a diagnosis or access care. It doesn’t wait for your career. Your education. Your social life or your relationships.

We’ll be sharing more throughout the month, including how you can join us in taking action this March.

🌸 Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month 🌸
This month is ovarian cancer awareness month, a condition that affects thousands of women every year. Ovarian cancer can affect women of any age, but it is more common in those over 50 and in people with a family history of ovarian, breast, or related cancers. 🎗️

Early diagnosis can make a significant difference, so knowing the symptoms is important. Common symptoms to look out for:
🔴 Persistent bloating
🟡 Needing to wee more urgently or more often
🟢 Feeling full quickly or loss of appetite
🔵 Pelvic or abdominal pain

These symptoms are often subtle and can be mistaken for other conditions, but if they are new, persistent, and happen most days for 3 weeks or more, please get in touch with your GP. 🩺

💭 Three Strikes and we Rethink 💭

Jess’s Rule encourages clinicians to reflect, review and rethink if a patient contacts their GP practice three times with the same or worsening symptoms, particularly if the cause remains unclear. This may involve reviewing previous consultations, arranging further assessment, seeking a second opinion, or considering additional tests or referral. 💬

Jess's Rule was introduced following the death of Jessica Brady, aged 27. Jess had many appointments at her GP surgery with ongoing symptoms before her cancer was diagnosed, and her family have since campaigned to raise awareness and help improve patient safety across the NHS.

You know your body best, so if something doesn’t feel right, ongoing concerns should always be reviewed. 🩵

🎗️It's Cervical Cancer Prevention Week🎗️
Cervical cancer is largely preventable through regular cervical screening and the HPV vaccination.
If you’ve been invited for screening, please consider booking your appointment.
For more information, visit: eveappeal.org.uk/ccpw

It's Cervical Cancer Prevention Week! All week we will be sharing information on HPV and the role of the HPV vaccination and cervical screening in cancer prevention.

Every day in the UK, two women and people with a cervix lose their lives to cervical cancer and nine more receive a life-changing diagnosis. We have a real opportunity to change this.

Cervical cancer is almost wholly preventable, and the government and NHS England have launched their plan to eliminate it by 2040. To get us to our goal of cervical cancer elimination, three key things are needed:
-9 in 10 girls vaccinated as part of the schools’ HPV vaccination programme or catch-up programme
-7 in 10 women and people with a cervix screened as part of the cervical screening programme
-9 in 10 women and people with a cervix who have precancerous cell changes, or cancer, identified and treated.

Yet, HPV vaccination and cervical screening uptake is still well below what is needed to reach our goal of eliminating cervical cancer.

Our survey (YouGov) found that around 3 in 4 people said they would be willing to get a vaccination to help reduce the risk of six types of cancer if they were eligible. Yet only 1 in 2 said they would get the HPV vaccination, which does help to reduce the risk of six types of cancer.

Out of the people we surveyed between 18-24 year olds, many of which will be eligible for the HPV vaccination as part of the catch-up programme, 4 in 5 said they would be willing to get a vaccination if it helped reduce the risk of six cancers.

Only 1 in 2 people we surveyed were aware that cervical cancer can be caused by HPV.

Awareness was even lower for the other five cancers – around 1 in 3 were aware HPV could cause vulval and vaginal cancers. Around 1 in 5 people were aware HPV could cause a**l and pe**le cancers. Just 8 in 100 people are aware HPV could cause head and neck cancers.

Keep an eye on our socials through the week for more information.

🎥 24 hours NOT in A&E 🎥

Last winter, there were more than 200,000 A&E attendances for conditions that could have been dealt with elsewhere across the NHS.

When you need help, A&E might seem like the obvious choice, but there are many ways to get NHS help for non-emergencies that work around your life.

Get the right care, in the right place, at the right time, and help free up emergency services for those who need them most this winter. 🚑❄️

Follow four people with four different health concerns as they get the NHS care they need – quickly and easily, without A&E. Get the right care, in the righ...
