I know “older mum” gets said like it’s a drawback sometimes… but honestly, I see it as a privilege.

Having my youngest at 40 has given me a perspective on life that not everyone gets. I’ll still have children at home into my late 50s—but I also remember life before smartphones. Before constant notifications. Before childhood got pulled onto screens.

I remember boredom… real, uncomfortable, creative boredom. I remember independence, freedom, and figuring things out without everything being documented, compared, or judged.

And I’ve also seen what’s changed.

The constant noise. The pressure. The comparison. The way “switching off” has become something we have to consciously try to do. It’s impossible to ignore the impact that shift has had on mental health—for us as adults, and even more so for our children growing up in it.

So when I choose a slower, simpler way for my family—more outside time, less screens, more independence, more imagination—it’s not about being anti-technology or stuck in the past.

It’s about protecting space for their minds to breathe.

I’ve seen both worlds. And I know which parts are worth holding onto.

Not perfectly. Not all the time. But intentionally.

And that, to me, feels like a real privilege 🤍
