So proud of my client William Wilson on his recent qualification journey and fights. William successfully won Senior Midlands Super-welterweight Championship a couple of weeks ago qualifying through to semi final stages of National Championship last night. Missing out marginally on points to go through to the Final, is no reflection of his professionalism, experience or dedication. It’s an absolute privilege to work with such a genuinely lovely client and athlete. Whilst he thanks me for supporting him throughout his training and journey, I personally want to thank him for choosing Hagley Sports Massage, me as his therapist - it’s an absolute pleasure. Last night wasn’t your time… but it soon very well will be!

Muscular Dysfunction and Injury

Efficient movement requires our soft tissues (including muscles, tendons, ligaments and cartilage) to function properly.

Unfortunately stresses from daily living have the potential over time to impair the functionality of the soft tissues, causing abnormalities, and lead to injury. Dysfunctions can start and progress as:
* a small muscular imbalance
* a shortened weakened muscle
* an altered joint movement
* inaccurate nervous stimulation of the muscle fibres
… and lead to injury!

Sadly if the injury is not addressed, treated and rehabilitated properly with correct movement patterns and muscle function restored, the injury cycle with repeat.

Hagley Sports Massage assesses, tailors a treatment plan to you the individual and your symptoms, and advises on corrective exercises / strength and conditioning to enable you to function and move efficiently not only in your sporting activities but day to day life. Call ⁨07788 584553⁩ to discuss your symptoms and book an appointment.

How Often Should You Book Soft Tissue Remedial Massage?

So many benefits… and so many reasons why!

You don’t need to be an athlete to benefit from soft tissue remedial therapy. Whether you train hard, work at a desk, manage a busy household or deal with daily aches and stress, your body works hard every day and needs regular maintenance.

How often you should book depends on your goals:
• Recovering from injury
• Improving athletic performance
• Correcting posture and movement issues
• Managing chronic pain
• Preventative maintenance
• Pre/post event treatment
• Stress relief and wellbeing

People who receive regular treatment often experience reduced pain and muscular tension, improved posture, increased range of movement, better strength and flexibility, and improved overall wellbeing, improved performance throughout daily activities or sport.

Frequent treatment can genuinely improve quality of life. Stress builds up in our muscles and connective tissues, and over time it impacts our health. Regular massage helps you stay ahead of this build-up, keeping your body balanced, mobile and resilient.

Consistency really does pay dividends. When you make treatment part of your routine, you move more freely, feel more relaxed and stay active for longer.

Iliotibial Band and Lateral Hip Complex: The Long Lever of Stability

The iliotibial band (ITB) isn’t just a strip of tissue on the outside of your thigh — it’s a powerful connector linking your glutes and TFL at the hip all the way down to the outside of the knee. Just like a long tension cable that helps transfer force and stabilise your entire lower limb.

At the hip, the glute max (back fibres) and TFL (front fibres) both feed into the ITB, creating a shared “tension system”. This allows force generated at the pelvis to travel down the outer thigh and influences how the knee moves and stabilises.

During walking and running, the ITB plays a huge role in controlling hip and knee stability. It helps prevent the thigh from collapsing inward and supports the knee during single-leg standing — something we do with every step.

It also helps make movement more energy-efficient. The ITB can store and release elastic energy, meaning your body doesn’t have to rely solely on muscle effort. This is especially important for runners and anyone doing endurance activity.

Balance between the glute max and TFL is key. When they work together, movement feels smooth and controlled. But, when the TFL takes over and the glute max underperforms, tension through the ITB can increase — often linked to lateral knee pain and ITB syndrome.

This highlights a big principle in the body: what happens at the hip can show up at the knee, and vice versa.

The IT band isn’t the problem — it’s the messenger telling you how well your hip and pelvis are working.

The Deep Longitudinal Subsystem (DLS) - the body’s power chain.

The DLS is like a motorway network for force in our body, linking the spine, hips, and legs enabling us to walk, run, and move efficiently without breaking down.

Every step sends force up through our legs—the DLS makes sure it’s handled safely, keeping the pelvis, trunk, and hamstrings working together. Just think, shock absorption, stability, and peak performance all in one!

What is it responsible for?• Transfers force from our upper to lower body
• Stabilizes our pelvis
• Controls leg motion while walking or running
• Absorbs impact from the ground
• Keeps our movement smooth and energy-efficient

Signs that the DLS isn’t functioning properly can include:
• Shin or calf tightness
• Pelvic or lower back discomfort
• Slower, inefficient running , hamstring strains
• Compensatory movement

Soft tissue remedial manual therapy can help maintain a happy DLS, enabling you to move more efficiently, with less discomfort and with more ease and power.

From assessment, to treatment, advice and support in home care and strength and conditioning, call Hagley Sports Massage on 07788 584553 today to discuss your issues and make an appointment.

Everything in the body is connected … working with injury, dysfunctions and pain, is like putting together the pieces of a jig saw!

If a link in a bicycle chain isn’t working properly neither will the rest of the chain and result in the bicycle not functioning. Our bodies are the same. We are connected from our toes to nostril and back down again by the kinetic chain. Did you know that we have twelve fascial slings interconnecting parts of our body to others e.g. hamstrings to the humerus (arm bone)?

Achilles tendinopathy (persistent long standing pain and trauma of the achilles tendon) is a great example of this. The Achilles tendon and calves are connected to the plantar fascia (fascial band of foot) on one end and to the hamstrings on the other end.

Weakness in the hamstrings can be a contributing factor and risk of Achilles tendinitis/tendinopathy. This weakness can cause compensations that lead to extra loading of the Achilles as the body moves differently.

If you are struggling to propel yourself forward using hip extension (as a result of tight / weak hamstrings) it will result in you pushing off more from the ankle and foot. This new movement pattern will increase the load and force on the achilles, building over time and can cause trauma and injury.

So, in looking at an injury, asking the “whys?” and “how’s? “, we need to look beyond the pain and investigate the reason this is happening. Assessment will be undertaken looking at all contributing factors and patterns, to piece together all the jig saw pieces” in order to build a picture and to provide a treatment solution.

Hagley Sports Massage looks well beyond the obvious and assesses the body as a whole. To discuss your issue and injury call today on ⁨07788 584553⁩.

Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) occur when tissues are placed under repeated demand over time — whether through work, sport, hobbies, or everyday habits. In other words, we’re all susceptible.

Common examples include tennis elbow, runner’s knee, plantar fasciitis and hamstring strains — often developing through overuse rather than a single injury. When tendons, ligaments or nerves become strained, the body often compensates elsewhere, which can lead to reactive muscle spasms, discomfort and ongoing pain.

Muscles that are weak, poorly controlled, or repeatedly used in overly stretched or shortened positions are more vulnerable to strain. Over time, the body adapts to whatever we do most often — but sometimes those adaptations come with a cost.

As compensation patterns build, nerves can become more sensitive, muscles may weaken, and certain areas of the body become highly reactive. This can leave the brain on “high alert” for pain, leading to muscle guarding, stress and persistent discomfort.

✨ Soft tissue therapy / Sports Massage can help by:
• Reducing muscle tension and guarding
• Improving circulation and tissue health
• Supporting recovery from overuse injuries
• Helping restore balanced movement patterns

If you’re noticing persistent tightness, recurring niggles or pain that won’t settle, it may be your body asking for some support.

Bicep Tendinitis – Front Shoulder/Arm Pain?

If you’ve been feeling pain in the front of your shoulder or upper arm, especially with lifting or reaching, you might be dealing with bicep tendinitis.

Bicep tendinitis is an irritation or inflammation of the long head of the biceps tendon (it has two heads) — the part of the biceps that runs up the front of your arm and attaches into the shoulder joint.

The long head tendon travels through a small channel in the upper arm bone (called the bicipital groove) before attaching inside the shoulder joint. At the lower end it attaches to the radius (lower arm bone) hence lower forearm symptoms too. Due to its position, it can become irritated with repetitive shoulder use, overhead or heavy lifting, or poor movement mechanics.

We use our biceps more than you think in everyday activities:
• Carrying shopping bags when bending the elbow
• Lifting children
• Pulling doors open
• Loading the dishwasher
• Using tools, turning your palm upward like using a screwdriver or opening a jar
• Gym exercises like curls, rows, or pull-ups
• Reaching overhead or into cupboards

Symptoms can include:
• Dull or sharp pain in the front of the shoulder
• Pain that travels down the front of the upper arm
• Tenderness when pressing on the front of the shoulder
• Pain with lifting, pulling, or overhead movements
• Weakness or fatigue in the arm
• Clicking or snapping sensation in the shoulder

Symptoms often worsen with repetitive use and improve with rest — at least temporarily.
If you’re noticing these signs, don’t ignore them. Early treatment is much easier than dealing with long-term irritation. Proper assessment, manual therapy, movement correction, and progressive strengthening can make a big difference.
