After an osteopathic appointment, you will probably be given some exercises to support your recovery & maintain your mobility.
If you've had an issue for a long time, it is common that you will have avoided certain movements, and sometimes muscles may have lost some of their strength. Personalised exercises help to retrain movement patterns, de-sensitise sore and painful structures, and rebuild strength and load capacity.
So should you do these exercises if you get discomfort or mild pain when trying them?
The simple answer is Yes! Within reason...
People worry that pain will make the problem worse, but this isn't strictly true. For most problems, a little pain won't harm you. In fact, research shows that there is a slight benefit in experiencing a little pain over no pain at all.
This doesn't mean that the exercises should have you in tears! and any discomfort should be relatively short lived. The aim isn't to cause pain, after all moving with a painful problem is unlikely to ever be pain free. The aim is more about learning that it's ok to feel the exercise.
If you're ever worried about how your exercises make you feel, then please get in touch. I will always take your opinion into account, so together we can develop an effective exercise program that you feel confident in.
