Thistle Equine Vets Our equine clinic, based in Kilmarnock, has a team of dedicated, exclusively equine clinicians. We also accept referrals from other veterinary surgeons.

We provide first opinion and emergency services to clients and their equines in Ayrshire, Greater Glasgow and Renfrewshire. For cases requiring further investigation or treatment we have in-patient stabling, with competent caring nurses and yard staff.

โค๏ธ MEET THE TEAM TUESDAY โค๏ธ

Laura is from Dundee and graduated from the University of Liverpool in July 2022 just before joining the team as an equine vet. She has always had a keen interest in horses, riding from a young age. Laura spent a number of years before university working in show jumping, hunting, racing and stud farms, both in the UK and abroad.

She also spent 3 years on a thoroughbred stud farm in Kentucky where she gained a lot of practical experience. She has a particular interest in stud medicine and surgery but enjoys all aspects of equine practice.

Outside of work, Laura is kept busy entertaining her two young sons.

Did you know horses can suffer from sunburn too? Areas with pink skin or little pigmentation โ€” such as white noses, around the eyes and white markings โ€” are especially vulnerable during warm, sunny weather.

โš ๏ธ Signs of sunburn in horses:

โ€ข Red or inflamed skin
โ€ข Dry, flaky or peeling areas
โ€ข Sensitive or painful skin
โ€ข Crusting or sores
โ€ข Horses rubbing affected areas

๐Ÿงด Tips to help protect your horse:

โœ… Apply horse-safe sun cream to sensitive areas
โœ… Provide shade in the field or stable during the hottest parts of the day
โœ… Consider UV protective fly masks or nose guards
โœ… Avoid prolonged exposure during peak sunshine hours
โœ… Check pink-skinned horses regularly for early signs of irritation

Severe or repeated sunburn can become very uncomfortable and may lead to skin damage, so prevention is key during the summer months. โ˜€๏ธ

Just a little reminder of what we have going on in our clinics.

Yard owners/Managers - get booked in for our bio security day where you will receive a personalised plan for your yard.

Vaccines - Are your horses vaccines up to date? If not take advantage of our offer running until the 8th June which includes the first two vaccines.

Equine Health Plan - This will cover your 3rd vaccine, ongoing annual boosters and all things preventative!!

We recently held some drop in clinics for vaccines. Is this something that would be useful again and which clinic would you use?
