NHS Scotland Cochlear Implant Programme

NHS Scotland Cochlear Implant Programme Welcome to the official SCIP page. For children, being able to hear clearly is key to developing spoken language.

This page is for:
- communicating with patients and professionals.
- sharing news relating to the SCIP.
- posting videos and information on advice and troubleshooting.
- sharing information about upcoming events. The Scottish Cochlear Implant Programme at University Hospital Crosshouse provides a national cochlear implant service for hearing impaired adults and children from throughout Scotland. NHS Ayrshire and Arran is commissioned to deliver this service by the National Services Division of NHS National Services Scotland. The main aim of cochlear implantation is to provide access to spoken language in patients with permanent, bilateral, severe to profound sensorineural deafness, who do not gain adequate benefit from conventional acoustic hearing aids. For adults and older children, this intervention is mainly directed at those who have lost their hearing (gradually or suddenly) and have already developed spoken language in childhood. The main objective is to enable these individuals to continue to communicate by talking/listening through improved hearing from a cochlear implant. For those who are born with a significant hearing loss in both ears, this may be achievable if cochlear implantation is carried out in early childhood (ideally between the ages of 12 to 18 months). The window of opportunity is limited and outcomes are compromised if cochlear implantation is delayed beyond the age of 3 years old.

Tokyo 2025 Deaflmpics
The meaning of Deaflympics is "Deaf + Olympics".
The Deaflympics is an international "Olympics for Deaf people."

This is an international multi-sport event for deaf athletes held every four years, organised by the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf (ICSD).

The first Deaflympics were held in Paris, France in 1924.
The TOKYO 2025 DEAFLYMPICS will be the 100th anniversary commemorative Games and will be held for the first time in Japan.

The Games are characterized by visual information & communication access utilising starting light and flags as well as International Sign.

To participate in the Deaflympics, athletes need to meet the following criteria:
- Athletes must have a minimum hearing loss of at least 55 dB* in their better ear without any hearing aids, etc.
- Athletes must be registered with the National Deaf Sports Federation in each country, and who must meet the requirements for participation, including records and ranking.

Our patient Christina is taking part in the game representing GB in the Woman’s Football.

You can watch along on the official Deaflympics website or YouTube channel.

Good Luck Christina!!

Christina is the only Scottish representative attending the Deaf Olympics in Tokyo this month.

Christina has always been a keen footballer but was getting fed up of her coaches not using Deaf awareness strategies in training sessions and she was ready to quit. Christina came along to our transitions day in June and met with the Scottish Deaf F.A. In just a few months she has gone from a local football club to GP Olympian!

Read her story below.
