NHS Scotland Cochlear Implant Programme

NHS Scotland Cochlear Implant Programme Welcome to the official SCIP page. For children, being able to hear clearly is key to developing spoken language.

This page is for:
- communicating with patients and professionals.
- sharing news relating to the SCIP.
- posting videos and information on advice and troubleshooting.
- sharing information about upcoming events. The Scottish Cochlear Implant Programme at University Hospital Crosshouse provides a national cochlear implant service for hearing impaired adults and children from throughout Scotland. N

HS Ayrshire and Arran is commissioned to deliver this service by the National Services Division of NHS National Services Scotland. The main aim of cochlear implantation is to provide access to spoken language in patients with permanent, bilateral, severe to profound sensorineural deafness, who do not gain adequate benefit from conventional acoustic hearing aids. For adults and older children, this intervention is mainly directed at those who have lost their hearing (gradually or suddenly) and have already developed spoken language in childhood. The main objective is to enable these individuals to continue to communicate by talking/listening through improved hearing from a cochlear implant. For those who are born with a significant hearing loss in both ears, this may be achievable if cochlear implantation is carried out in early childhood (ideally between the ages of 12 to 18 months). The window of opportunity is limited and outcomes are compromised if cochlear implantation is delayed beyond the age of 3 years old.

Are you a hearing parent of a Deaf child?

Wendy Winter is a first year Trainee Clinical Psychologist on the Doctorate programme at the University of Glasgow. For her Major Research Project, she is exploring early relationships between hearing parents and their deaf or hard of hearing infants and toddlers. She would really value gaining parents viewpoints about what they feel would be most important or helpful to explore. Here is a link to some questions for you to answer to provide some honest insights into this area.

As part of Deaf Awareness week, we want to shine a spotlight on YSCIN - the Young Scottish Cochlear Implant Network. YSCIN provides connection, advocacy, education, and support. It brings young cochlear implant users together, gives them a voice, and creates opportunities to influence real change.
Several members of YSCIN recently had the opportunity to present at the BCIG conference held in Glasgow. They used this platform to speak about how important it is to have transition events, what these events mean to them, the aims of the YSCIN group, messages for professionals working in the CI field and what is next for YSCIN. Congratulations to you all, it was an inspiring presentation. .nardini

One of our patients, Abu, is currently studying an HND in Sports Coaching at college. As a CI user themselves they are interested to look at how CIs have impacted people in sport. They are looking for volunteers to help them with their project. This is suitable for any CI user who has taken part in any sporting activity of any ability at any level. Here is a link to the survey.
