THE ORIGIN OF OCEAN SOUL THERAPIES
Put simply, Ocean Soul Therapies was born from a love of travel, nature and the ocean. I grew up living near the sea and soon realised that when I spent long periods of time away from the water, I not only missed it but felt actively uncomfortable. I believe in an intrinsic connection to the water and to all aspects of nature. Take a quiet walk in the woods or a paddle in the sea sometime and see how you feel after. My early working life was based in hospitality and administration. It took me until my thirties before I perceived where my true life path lay. We are not the same person at 30 as we are at 18 when we are first encouraged to choose a career for ourselves so it should be no surprise that I completely changed direction. The catalyst for me was travel. This is one of my most abiding passions and an activity that I indulge in as often as time and funds allow. By the time I hit 30, I’d known for several years that I wanted to retrain and do a job that I truly loved and felt passionate about. The problem was I didn’t know exactly what that was. At this time I set off on a solo trip to New Zealand for a year. I was in my element there, living in a campervan with no set schedule beyond a desire to see everywhere and without a care in the world. It was there that I met a fantastic and charismatic person who introduced me to the world of complementary therapies and associated meditation, yoga, energy work and a more natural way of living. I wasn't aware of it at the time but everything was sinking in and it made sense to me. Through this one person, I met more and more people who worked in complementary healthcare (and ended up taking an unintended trip to Australia but that’s another story) and I was struck by their attitude to their work. It wasn’t just a job for them but something they were passionate about and an integral part of their life and beliefs. They seemed so happy and content in this area of their lives. Personally, at this point I had been struggling with back pain and emotional issues for some years and I discovered a whole new way to help myself. Only when I returned home did I comprehend that this was my future path. I truly believe there is nothing like travel to blow open your mind and clear it of old patterns and beliefs that no longer serve you. Two years of full time study and hands-on training ensued and I opened Ocean Soul Therapies in June 2017. I love that every day is different and the personal connection I have forged with clients. Through my work I am able to educate and help people with health issues who have perhaps not found the results and relief they were hoping for with traditional healthcare. I am always learning more and thinking of ways to bring this to the public and my clients. This is where I am supposed to be, this is my life path and I’m full of gratitude for the people and circumstances that brought me here.

I hope everyone is having a lovely relaxing weekend wherever you are. I have made a few changes to the business such as a small price increase (my first since 2017) and opening hours are now 10am-5pm alternate Saturdays/Sundays. This is because I now work full time through the week and sadly don't have any spare time to offer treatments then.

It’s hot! ☀️ Are you staying hydrated? During the summer months we tend to be out and about more and can often forget to stay hydrated. Be sure to keep on top of your hydration levels 💦
Finding it difficult to relax? Diaphragmatic breathing takes practice but can help ⬇️

Article from a few years ago that I found interesting in how it relates to smelling essential oils and the effect this can have on the brain.
Brain anatomy may explain why some smells conjure vivid memories and emotions.

PAIN RELIEF FOR STIFF SORE MUSCLES
I thought I would talk about some of the products I use regularly to help release muscle tension and relieve aches and pains. I try to only use NSAIDs such as ibuprofen as a last resort as these can come with their own side effects.
⭐️ Pure Encapsulations Magnesium Glycinate
Lack of magnesium in the body can often result in tense tight muscles & it’s very difficult to achieve the RDA through diet alone. The role of magnesium in the body is absolutely fascinating (I promise!) and lack of it can be a factor in many common conditions. As with all supplements, it may not be suitable for everyone and you need to do your own research before deciding to take it.
If you are interested in learning more then I highly recommend Dr Carolyn Dean’s book ‘The Magnesium Miracle’. It was an absolute eye opener for me and I have personally found that regular use significantly reduces my muscle soreness and also improves my general mood.
⭐️ Feather & Down Soothing Sleep Butter with magnesium
More of the above. Magnesium supplements can come in many different forms. Rubbing mag butter into the skin allows you to target a specific sore area/muscle group (stiff neck anyone?). This cream smells lovely and absorbs well, just like a normal thick body lotion but with the added benefit of magnesium absorption 😌 When reading reviews on it, many sufferers of Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) found it made a huge difference in helping them to have a good nights sleep 💤
⭐️ Weleda Arnica Massage balm
Arnica is widely known for its pain relieving properties and the concentration in this quality oil is high. Wonderful for after strong exercise, I find it reduces any next-day soreness. I often recommend this to my sporty clients 🏌🏼♀️❤️
⭐️ Medicine ball
Any small hard (eg. tennis) ball will do for this. By gently pressing the ball into a sore area and keeping it there for 3+ mins, you’ll find the muscles will slowly start to ‘give’ & release. An easy way to do this is to lie on the floor and place the ball under the sore area then the body’s own weight will do the work while you get to just lie there, breathing deeply and slowly 😄 I often roll one around under my foot arch which helps a lot.
I hope some or all of this is helpful to you and if you have any questions, please do get in touch or book an appointment with me. Erin x

Now this is interesting 🧐 💡
In my own personal experience, I have found that spearmint tea helped to clear my mild hormonal acne. I tried this after reading a scientific study and found it genuinely worked. 3 mugs of tea per day seemed to be the ideal quantity to see results after only 4-6 days. Worth bearing in mind if you or your child suffers from acne or other hormonal issues yourself 😉
This is an example of the kind of helpful advice that I am happy to give my clients alongside their treatment when searching for more natural ways of treating common issues. Never be afraid to ask. If I don’t know the answer then I’ll do some research to find out 😊 Erin x
Researchers reviewing 9 different studies on herbal teas have concluded that they not only taste nice but also have important health benefits, especially if you're a woman. German Chamomile, Rosehip and Spearmint infusions were tested with Chamomile proving the most effective in helping women to sleep better after childbirth and also in reducing symptoms of PMS, menstrual pain, stress and anxiety. It was also found to improve metabolism, including glucose and insulin control which can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. Rosehip also helped ease menstrual pain and spearmint improved hormonal control.
If you're suffering with your hormones and PMS you might also like to try our PMT pure essential oil which is expertly with Clary Sage, Sweet Marjoram, Geranium, Bergamot, Parsley Seed and Rose Otto to help soothe and restore balance to mind and body. Like so many others around us, I have fallen victim to Covid. While I’ve been lucky enough to have reacted fairly mildly to it, it’s in my nature as a complementary therapist to ask myself - what can I do to support my body at this time and help move the virus along as quickly as possible? 🤔🦠
My own symptoms included sore throat, cough, runny nose and blocked sinuses among others (other people may vary in how it affects them) so I have been doing daily steam inhalations for 5-10 mins at a time using a few drops of hyssop essential oil in just-boiled water.
Why hyssop? 🌱 It’s antiviral, helps to purify and clear the respiratory system & bring up any phlegm (lovely I know), it supports the immune system & helps to stop muscles from spasming eg. coughing. It also relieves any fatigue and anxiety 😌
(NB. Safety note: 🚨this does NOT mean hyssop is suitable for everyone, it shouldn’t be used in certain circumstances but, in the hands of a qualified aromatherapist, it can be used safely).
While it’s hard to say for sure, I believe this simple action has helped me to feel better and recover faster, alongside the obvious measures of drinking plenty of fluids, rest, etc. Steam inhalation is a simple and easy way of using essential oils to support your health and harmony ☯️
