When you can't lift it anymore, you're not completely done. You are still able to either hold the weight at the mid point or do slow negative reps, and the negative rep is twice as beneficial as the positive (way up)
Going beyond failure hurts, it's tiring, but it's highly effective. A good training partner or PT is required.
