Living longer is one thing. Living better is another.

If you want to feel sharper, move better, and stay active into later life, it’s time to build your healthspan toolkit. Here are six strategies supported by emerging science - many rooted in ancient wisdom - and how chiropractic fits into the picture.

⏲️ Intermittent fasting: This has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity, support cellular repair processes like autophagy, and reduce inflammation. Studies have demonstrated that time-restricted feeding can positively impact body weight, blood pressure, and lipid profiles (Patterson et al., 2015).

❄️ Cold exposure: Cold exposure, such as cryotherapy or cold-water immersion, activates brown adipose tissue and improves mitochondrial function. It has been associated with reduced muscle soreness, enhanced immune response, and improvements in mood through endorphin release (Bleakley et al., 2014)

🌡️ Sauna use: Sauna bathing offers cardiovascular benefits comparable to moderate physical activity. Regular sauna use has been linked to reduced risk of sudden cardiac death, fatal coronary heart disease, and all-cause mortality (Laukkanen et al., 2015). It also supports detoxification and heat shock protein activation.

🌳 Forest bathing: Forest bathing (shinrin-yoku), a practice originating in Japan, has been shown to reduce cortisol levels, lower blood pressure, and increase parasympathetic activity. It enhances natural killer cell activity by up to 50%, strengthening immune surveillance (Li, 2010).

🥬Gut health: Microbiome modulation - through diet, probiotics, and lifestyle - can dramatically impact inflammation and mental health. A 2016 study found that probiotic supplementation in Alzheimer’s patients significantly improved cognitive function and metabolic markers (Kobayashi et al., 2016).

🏋️‍♀️ Strength and mobility: Crucial for healthy aging and preventing frailty. One of the most pressing concerns in the context of aging and longevity is sarcopenia, the age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength. Sarcopenia is a strong predictor of frailty, disability, and mortality. Chronic low-grade inflammation accelerates muscle wasting and undermines physical resilience.

Chiropractic care, with its focus on spinal health, neuro-musculoskeletal function, and whole-person wellness, is uniquely suited to contribute to longevity science. Chiropractors can offer:

✔️ Functional movement assessments and manual therapies that preserve mobility and prevent musculoskeletal degeneration.

✔️ Education and support for anti-inflammatory lifestyle practices.

✔️ Strategies for stress reduction and autonomic balance through nervous system regulation.

✔️ Referrals and collaborations with other professionals in integrative health to ensure comprehensive care.

Chiropractic is not merely reactive care for back pain; it is an essential component of a proactive, preventative, and participatory model of healthcare.

'Chiropractic, Longevity, and the Lifestyle Revolution: Reframing 21st Century Healthcare' by Dr Faye Deane, explores the intersection between longevity science, lifestyle medicine, and chiropractic practice, with emphasis on inflammation, the gut-brain axis, and the evolving role of chiropractors in public health.

Why is chiropractic still missing from NHS pathways - despite growing MSK demand and strong evidence for its impact?

Last week, our CEO Cait Allen visited the House of Lords to raise this exact issue with Baroness Ritchie and Lord Weir.

As discussed during the meeting, we believe excluding chiropractic from integrated healthcare models is a missed opportunity, especially considering:

1. The aims of the NHS 10-Year Plan

2. The growing burden of MSK conditions

3. Evidence showing chiropractic care can help people return to work more quickly

4. The potential for community-based care to ease system pressure

We also shared our concern that decisions about the profession continue to rely on outdated policy and evidence from 2019.

There is now robust, updated research (including health economics data from the University of York) that supports the case for chiropractic’s inclusion in NHS and local service models.

We're encouraged by the support and outcomes of the meeting, including:

1. Oral and written parliamentary questions to address:

- How community chiropractors could be integrated into neighbourhood MSK services

- The potential to expand the AHP list to include more community-based healthcare professionals

2. A potential parliamentary debate on professional integration

3. Support in contacting key decision-makers

Such as the Minister for Health to highlight that current policy positions are based on outdated information.

These are important steps forward. Raising the profile of chiropractic in Parliament increases awareness, builds credibility, and helps lay the groundwork for future integration into NHS pathways and multi-disciplinary care.

We are grateful for this support and to our public affairs partners at Tendo for helping us bring these issues to the highest level of political discussion.

The BCA will continue to advocate for the fair evaluation, recognition, and integration of chiropractic within UK healthcare.

We’re committed to change.

It's been a pleasure to have Lilly with us this week. Lilly is doing her work experience here at the clinic, to consider whether this is the direction she wants to go for her future career. By the end of the week she will have seen six different clinicians from three different disciplines, and experienced dozens of different cases. Thank you to those of you have generously agreed to have Lilly sitting in this week! We wish her all the best for her future career prospects.

And lastly, as we look at things to do on holiday, don't forget to keep moving! A day by the pool on the recliner can be lovely, but work in a gentle walk and some stretches too.
And have a great time!

Next in our series of things to watch for when you go away on holiday is the holiday bed! It may not be a good quality bed, but even if it is, it won't be what you're used to at home. If you're uncomfortable when you wake in the morning, try putting a spare duvet on top of the mattress to make it a little softer, or shift the mattress to the floor if you need firmer support. If you have space, consider taking your own pillow if it's one that works well for you. And again, consider stretches in the morning to get you going for the day!

02/07/2025

Another risk when we head off on holiday is the suitcase! They can of course be heavy to lift and manoeuvre, and pulling them behind produces an awkward twisted posture. Consider pushing your case in front of you, particularly if it has four wheels, and use a backpack over both shoulders for lightweight travelling. Don't forget to ask for help from airport and airline staff if you need to!

01/07/2025

First in our series of things to watch for when you go on holiday is the travelling. You might be spending a long time in the car, or be squeezed into a plane seat for several hours. This immobility runs the risk of our joints stiffening up, and perhaps straining in an uncomfortable position.

If you're in a car, make sure you take breaks, get out and have a good walk around and perhaps do some gentle stretches. And even in a small plane seat, there are simple stretches you can do which will help - search online or speak to your clinician here.

As we're approaching holiday season, we're repeating our previous series of holiday advice posts!

Schools have broken up and it feels like the start of summer holidays! Rented cottages, hired villas, warm beaches and country walks beckon.

Very often, a bit of rest and recreation can be helpful for back pain, but there are particular issues with holidays, which can catch us unawares and run the risk of causing or increasing our aches and pains.

So this week, we going to do a series of posts on things to watch out for, and what to do about them. Look out for tomorrow's post!

We’re living longer than ever before. But are we living better?
While life expectancy increases, healthspan—the years we live in good health—is shrinking.

Our current healthcare model is built for crisis management, not prevention. It waits for disease instead of working to prevent it. And it rarely addresses the underlying causes: inflammation, stress, lifestyle mismatch, and system breakdown.

Chronic inflammation has become the hidden engine behind many of today’s most common diseases - from arthritis to Alzheimer's. But this isn’t inevitable. It’s a response to modern living: ultra-processed diets, sedentary routines, disrupted sleep, and chronic stress.

Here’s where chiropractic enters the conversation.

As a profession rooted in whole-person, neuro-musculoskeletal health, chiropractic is uniquely positioned to lead the lifestyle and longevity revolution.

Chiropractors:

◾Address root causes, not just symptoms
◾Help patients manage stress and inflammation
◾Support nervous system regulation
◾Guide sustainable lifestyle changes
◾Collaborate across disciplines for whole-person care

Chiropractic care isn’t just for back pain, it’s a preventative, proactive model of health. It helps people thrive, not just survive.

In this new Knowledge Hub article, Dr Faye Deane, explores the intersection between longevity science, lifestyle medicine, and chiropractic practice, with emphasis on inflammation, the gut-brain axis, and the evolving role of chiropractors in public health.
