Tuberculosis (TB) still affects people in the UK even though it is preventable and curable. The World Health Organisation estimates 10 million people develop TB each year, with over 1 million deaths.

This (24 March) let’s raise awareness, reduce stigma, and help ensure TB is diagnosed and treated early.

Know the common signs and symptoms:
· A cough lasting three weeks or more (not resolved by antibiotics)
· Extreme tiredness
· Fever
· Night sweats
· Loss of appetite
· Weight loss

Please do see your GP if you are experiencing these symptoms. You can also ask your GP or Respiratory Nurse Specialist about Latent TB which is a dormant form of the infection with no symptoms, which can be detected with a blood test for those eligible.

We are a proud accredited organisation.

In preparation for Month of the Military Child in April, we have launched a fun-filled Children’s Competition to celebrate this important occasion and get creative. This is aimed at children in our Armed Forces/ Veteran communities, young patients in the Trust, and children of Team QEH staff.

The theme for this competition is ‘Armed Forces Superheroes’. We would like children to use this theme and show us any special ideas or memories, in the form of a poem or picture. The competition is now open, and the winner will receive a prize, kindly donated by our local Armed Forces charity, The Bridge for Heroes.

The competition is open now until Monday 30 March.

Full details can be found on our website: https://www.qehkl.nhs.uk/.../month-of-the-military-child.../

Thank you to our Armed Forces community.

Congratulations to this week’s Team of the Week - Orthopaedic Outpatients

Their nomination reads: "Over 2000 patients attend appointments in the department each month and the friends and family feedback comments are consistently good.

"With the demands on their service increasing it is clear to see the staff in the department strive to provide the best possible care at all times, but also take time to reflect on any other feedback and try to learn from it. With this in mind a successful application was made to the Room for improvement team to change the reception area in the department to make it more 'patient - friendly' particularly as many of the patients who attend the department have mobility issues.

"Despite their small size the team continue to provide a high standard of care for all the patients who attend the department and I strongly feel this should be recognised and applauded with a team of the week award."

This week is Sign Language Week and The QEH is ensuring patients who communicate via British Sign Language (BSL) can do so in hospital.

We offer video interpreting services for BSL users anytime, anywhere in the hospital.

This year our team provided over 132,345 minutes of interpreting services (including BSL) helping patients communicate about their care.

A special thanks to Language Line and INTRAN in making this service possible.

If you find yourself receiving care at The QEH and are struggling to communicate with our staff, please let them know so they can access interpreter services for you.
