Today, in celebration of National Operating Department Practitioner Day, our Executive Managing Director, Michelle Arrowsmith, visited our main theatres to thank our incredible ODPs and hear about their experiences and the vital work they do every day.

Michelle's uplifting visit yielded some great conversations with our ODP's where she learnt the various backgrounds they come from (Ultrasound, Armed Forces, Dentistry and Pharmacy) and how we continue to grow our own through apprenticeship schemes.

Happy National ODP day 🎉

Today we’re celebrating National Operating Department Practitioner Day and recognising the fantastic contribution our 46 ODP colleagues make across Team QEH every single day.

Whether supporting patients through anaesthetics, surgery or recovery, ODPs play a vital role in delivering compassionate and effective care – often in fast-paced and high-pressure environments.

A huge thank you to all of our ODP colleagues for everything you do for our patients, teams and hospital.

Michelle Arrowsmith, Executive Managing Director, said: "Today we’re proud to recognise National ODP Day and shine a light on the invaluable work of our 46 Operating Department Practitioners at The QEH.

"ODPs are there for patients throughout their entire surgical journey, from start to finish, providing expert care across our operating theatres. With specialist training in anaesthetics, surgery and recovery, they play a key role in caring for all of our patients having surgery.

"They put patients at ease, set up operating theatres with specialised equipment, and work closely with multidisciplinary teams. They are central to the smooth running of our theatres.

"I'd like to thank all of our ODPs for their commitment, expertise and compassion. Thank you for the difference you make to patients’ lives."

🌞 Sun Awareness Week is an annual campaign organised by dermatology and cancer prevention organisations. Here are some simple ways to protect your skin. 🕶

👕 Slip on a shirt – protect your skin with clothing & don’t forget to put on a hat that protects your face, neck & ears and a pair of UV protective sunglasses to protect your eyes. 👒

🕶 Seek out shade – Step out of the sun before your skin has a chance to redden or burn. Keep babies & very young children out of direct sunlight. 👶

🧴 Slap on the Sunscreen – Look for:

o High protection – (SPF) Sun Protection Filter (min SPF 30) to protect against UVB rays from the sun which cause sunburn.
o The UVA circle logo and/or 4 or 5 UVA stars to protect against UVA rays, which cause skin aging and sun damage.

Celebrating Nurses on International Nurses Day

Michelle Arrowsmith, Executive Managing Director, said: " Today we come together to recognise the incredible contribution of the 1,117 nurses at The QEH and those across the country.

“Nurses provide care and support to people when they are most vulnerable - from newborn babies to those in their final moments of life. They work tirelessly, day and night, 365 days of the year and use their skills, knowledge and compassion to save lives and support recovery.

“Nurses are central to everything we do across our Trust. They work in every area of our hospital from caring for patients on our wards, educating the next generation of nursing staff, playing key operational roles and taking on vital leadership roles.

“I often receive letters from patients describing how nurses go above and beyond in challenging circumstances, supporting patients, families and each other. These acts of dedication are often described as part of the job, yet what is seen as routine by many is truly impactful for those receiving care.

“Thank you to every one of you for the care you give and difference you make."
