Let’s talk about breath. Specifically pranayama.
As a teacher I focus on proper yogic breathing. I reinforce conscious connection to breath in every class I teach from slow to flow, ante and postnatal, it’s the foundation of how I teach.
I believe you should make breathing techniques accessible to everyone. The body, mind and emotional self benefit from attention to breath, soothing the nervous system, alleviating stress and anxiety. We boost our respiratory functions and feel better in ourselves.
The beauty is it can be done anywhere. You might see me sitting on a bench on the coastal path doing some whilst the dog waits patiently for the walk to continue. Chances are my eyes will be closed so I won’t notice you!
In last week’s beach yoga practice I guided the group through alternate nostril breathing (anuloma viloma), no breath retention with tips for those that struggle with their sinuses, hand gestures or were less familiar with the technique.
The result? A profound and calming practice in the serene sunshine on a deserted beach. Just breath and the sound of the sea kissing the shoreline. Bliss!
Yes we moved through some sun salutations and plenty of other poses afterwards but let’s remember there is so much more to yoga than asana (poses). If you never do any pranayama, are you really feeling the full benefits of this ancient practice?
We’ll be back on the beach at South Milton Sands this Tuesday 08:30. Whether you are local or down on holiday, a beginner or roll out your mat regularly, beach yoga is a magical way to start the day.
Message me to join this lovely group,
