Why Ear Syringing Isn’t Used Anymore (According to NICE - National Institute of Clinical Excellence)
Most people remember the old “big syringe of water” approach… but did you know NICE no longer recommends ear syringing for removing ear wax?
Here’s why:
- It can push wax deeper, making the blockage worse
- It carries a higher risk of ear canal injury and eardrum perforation
- It’s less effective than modern methods
- NICE now recommends microsuction or irrigation using controlled, specialist equipment, not the old syringe method
In short: safer, gentler, more effective options exist, and that’s why healthcare professionals have moved on.
If your ears feel blocked, muffled, or full of pressure, I offer safe, nurse‑led ear wax removal at home using clinically approved techniques - no syringes in sight.
