Which diet is best for optimal health?

When people ask me what diet is best I always reply it depends, because it depends on multiple factors for that individual. However, whatever diet you want to follow I’ll always suggest an abundance and diversity of plants 🌱

Plants provide us with unique chemicals known as phytonutrients! These have been shown to reduce the risk of many diseases and improve lots of metabolic health biomarkers.

Whatever you want to eat. If you want to optimise your health, eat lots of different plants.

So next time for breakfast instead of bread, slice a sweet potato and top with a bunch of colourful plants- your gut bugs will thank you🤙🏽🌱

3 simple ways to drastically improve your health:

1. Getting daily exposure to natural sunlight helps give your brain information on what time of day it is, helping align your circadian rhythm. This helps with your sleep-wake cycle, natural release of hormones and metabolic tasks.

2. EAT REAL FOOD! If you buy food which is in a packet or has information on it, the chances are it’s been processed in some way. Eating natural whole foods and reducing intake of ultra-processed foods are linked to better health outcomes and reduced risk of disease and mortality.

3. Move once every 30 mins. Most of us are sedentary, meaning we spend most of our time seated or inactive. Sedentary behaviour is linked to worse health outcomes and increased risk of diseases and mortality. By simply going for a 2 minute walk every 30 mins of inactivity, you break up long sedentary periods having a positive impact on your health!

We have evolved to move, to venture, to seek, to walk. In modern times we have forgotten that innate behaviour is coded within our genes🧬

If you want a simple daily habit that will have profound affects on your health, start walking more! Even an extra 10 minutes a day will have positive benefits on your brain, endothelium/cardiovascular health and metabolic power-plants known as your mitochondria cells!

When we embrace the journey, in any aspect of our lives, we tend to be happier and get better outcomes!

1. Know what is important
2. Control the controllable’s
3. Appreciate the present
4. Make mistakes, learn and go again
5. Try new things

Apply these simple 5 rules to your health and you’ll have a good starting point!

Food is so much more than just calories. It’s information for all your cells and metabolic processes in your body. Having a say on your risk for disease in the future, or longevity of life.

So to put it bluntly, if you value your health, you have to look more into food than just calories!

Calories matter. But when it comes to health, they take the back seat- change my mind

Let’s change the narrative. Let’s focus on the QUALITY of foods we’re eating instead of the number of calories they contain.

🧬Did you know that what food you choose to eat has an influence on how your genes are expressed? You aren’t born destined to have disease, you may however be predisposed to it (parent with diabetes/cancer). So simply what you eat can alter and prevent this genetic expression🧬

Eating foods rich in micronutrients, fibre and polyphenols (the chemicals found exclusively whole plant foods) help prevent and cure many of the chronic diseases we see so much of today! So make simple changes, eat more colourful and more diverse plants and focus on the QUALITY of your foods!

Don’t overthink cooking! Healthy doesn’t have to be complicated! Use real whole foods, a mix of spices and some creativity and voila! You’ll have made a nutritious meal that’s beneficial to your health🙌

By having a short morning stretch routine you help mobilise your joints and increase blood flow around your body. Even by doing a couple of minutes every morning is enough.

So whilst the kettle is boiling for your morning coffee, do a few stretches! Doing this every day will have a huge impact on your mobility and over time with enough stretching will help reduce injury risk!

I believe we have become separated from real food. We now get food in nicely prepackaged containers, and fruit and veg where we only choose the ‘perfect’ looking ones. When in reality, there’s nothing wrong with the carrot that looks like it has a pair of legs!

My approach to nutrition is simple. Eat real food. Eat a diverse range of whole food ingredients. If you follow this approach you can tailor your nutrition to whatever you want- Vegan, Paleo, Keto, pescatarian, carnivore, whatever you like.

If you have 5+ more plants with every meal, you’ll likely be increasing your microbial diversity within your gut microbiome! This will come with many health benefits🙌

Short Chain Fatty Acids⛓

SCFAs are released from the breakdown of soluble fibre. Where do we get fibre from? PLANTS 🌱🥝🥦

-The gut microbes work together to break down these types of fibres, which releases SCFAs. We then use these amazing compounds to our benefit!

-SCFAs have been shown to promote neuroplasticity, helping boost cognitive function. They have also been linked to decreasing neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

-SCFAs also reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, metabolic syndrome and also improve your immune response, protecting you from infectious disease!

-My simple advice is to eat lots of plants! And more importantly, a diverse range of plants! 🌱🥝🥦
