During Ramadan, Muslims aren’t just “not eating.” It’s a physically, mentally, and spiritually demanding month.
Here’s what many observing Muslims endure and commit to:
🌙 Daily Fasting (Sawm)
No food
No water
No caffeine
No smoking
From dawn (Fajr) until sunset (Maghrib).
In the UK, that can mean 13–16+ hours depending on the time of year.
💤 Disrupted Sleep
Waking before dawn for Suhoor (pre-fast meal)
Late-night prayers (Taraweeh)
Working full shifts on reduced sleep
🧠 Mental & Emotional Discipline
Avoiding gossip, anger, swearing
Extra emphasis on patience and self-control
Increased reflection and gratitude
💰 Increased Charity (Zakat & Sadaqah)
Many give significant charitable donations during this month
Focus on supporting vulnerable people
🕌 Increased Worship
Extra prayers
Reading the Qur’an
Community gatherings at Iftar (breaking the fast)
💪 Still Working Full-Time
Teachers, paramedics, police, nurses, security staff — still doing long shifts without water.
That last one hits especially hard in frontline jobs so thank you to all those continuing to work during this period ♥️
