If you’re feeling the weight of New Year’s expectations, you’re not alone. Many of us are quietly wondering if we’re doing enough, changing fast enough, or starting the year “right.

You don’t have to transform overnight. It’s okay to move at your own pace, to rest, and to simply be.

Try asking yourself: “What’s one small thing I can do today that feels gentle?”

You’re allowed to take things slow. You’re allowed to be kind to yourself.

If you need a little extra support, we’re here—local, understanding, and ready to listen.

December can feel overwhelming, even when it’s meant to be joyful. If you’re feeling the pressure, you’re not alone.

Here are some gentle ways to look after yourself this season:

• Let go of ‘perfect’: Traditions and adverts can set unrealistic expectations. Focus on what matters most to you, not what you think you ‘should’ do.

• Set boundaries: It’s okay to say no or to take a break from gatherings if you need space.

• Prioritise rest: Schedule downtime, even if it’s just a quiet cup of tea or a short walk.

• Notice small joys: A favourite song, a warm drink, or a kind message can bring comfort.

• Be kind to yourself: However you’re feeling, it’s valid. Treat yourself with the same compassion you’d offer a friend.

You’re doing your best – and that’s enough. 💚

✨ Meet The Team Monday – Tom: Operations Director at The Focus Group ✨

Driven by a lifelong passion for helping others, Tom now oversees the day-to-day running of the organisation and supports our team to deliver the best possible care.

He loves the challenge, the variety, and the impact our work has on the people who walk through our doors.

Read on to learn what motivates him, the book he always recommends, and why he actually enjoys turbulence… ✈️✈️✈️

What’s your role, and what does a typical day look like for you?

I’m the Operations Director here at Focus, with my day spent wearing a variety of different hats. I have overall responsibility of the day to day running of Focus, with my business partner Pete supporting the Clinical Services we offer.

My day could include reviewing our organisations financial position, supporting team members with challenges or developing strategic relationships. It varies massively from day to day, and that’s why I enjoy it.

How long have you been with the Focus?

I left University in 2007 in search of a graduate placement, I faced an immediate barrier with this, in so far as I didn’t actually apply for any. With this part of my master plan scuppered, I came to Focus to work as a part time administrator in the same year, I have now worked in just about every role (other than within the Clinical Team) throughout my nearly 19 years with the company.

What inspired you to join this field?

I have always been inspired by the helping professions. With my father working at Hull University, founding FASU (Family Assessment and Support Unit) and my mother in Teaching, I could see their passion for helping those around them each day.

If you know the history of Focus, you know what is means to those who work within it. Each person joins for reasons bigger than themselves - each day I’m inspired to do the best I can for those that do their best for others.

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

Each day is different, and working in business is hard. The reward of overcoming challenges big or small keeps me invested in our growth.

Each person that walks through our doors is often taking a step into the unknown, they’re offering their most honest selves to our clinicians, this carries a huge level of responsibility.

Seeing people recognised, often with life changing or affirming outcomes, is something I don’t think you get in any other world of work.

If you weren’t in this role, what job would you love to try?

I always wanted to be a pilot, I still love jumping on a plane, and although I hate rides, I love turbulence! Terror and excitement in one moment, what’s not to love.

What’s one book, TV show, or podcast you’d recommend?

The Kite Runner - I’m not an avid reader, but I’ve read it on four or five occasions now. It’s a book about fear, redemption and a cause bigger than yourself. Give it a read!

If you could travel anywhere tomorrow, where would you go?

Send me back to Mallorca with my bike please. Not exactly glamorous, but too much fun!

The theme for this year's Grief Awareness Week is 'Growing with Grief'.

Here at Focus, we know grief doesn’t follow a straight line. It becomes part of us — shifting, softening, and changing as we do. However you’re moving through your loss, please know your journey is valid.

We’ve created a gentle set of reminders to support anyone navigating grief right now. Please feel free to save, share, or pass them on to someone in our community who may need a little comfort today. 💛

🌟 International Men’s Day 🌟

Today, we celebrate the men who lead with compassion, strength, and authenticity.

Here are our two Directors, Pete and Tom — pictured here during the build of our offices — whose commitment to improving mental health support in our community has shaped who we are today.

International Men’s Day is a reminder that men’s wellbeing matters. Whether it’s talking openly, asking for help, or supporting one another, every step toward positive mental health makes a difference.

To all the men in our community: we see you, we value you, and we’re here for you. 💙

💫💫Meet the Team Monday💫💫

Say hello to Elley, our Trainee High Intensity CBT Therapist! 👋

From Philosophy graduate to psychology enthusiast, she’s travelled the world, supported others abroad, and now brings her warmth and passion for helping people to the Focus team.

Get to know her below!

What’s your role, and what does a typical day look like for you?

I'm a Trainee High Intensity CBT Therapist - and a typical day in service usually involves seeing clients, preparing for sessions, reading (there's always reading to be done!) and completing admin.

How long have you been with the Focus?

7 months.

What inspired you to join this field?

I've always been curious about the mind. My first degree is in Philosophy, and after studying I'd worked abroad for a couple of years. Whilst living in New Zealand I'd started to volunteer with older adults a few hours a week, and the best part of it was finding out about them and hearing their stories. I realised I wanted to work in a helping capacity, so after coming home, I studied an evening course in Counselling at college before getting on to a Masters degree in Psychology.

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

The most rewarding part of my job is the privilege of being invited into people’s lives.
If you weren’t in this role, what job would you love to try?

A radio presenter! The idea of playing my favourite music and chatting to people who ring in all day sounds pretty great.

What’s one book, TV show, or podcast you’d recommend?

Book: When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi - it's a gut punchingly poignant and reflective look at mortality, morality and purpose.

Podcast: Hidden Brain - looking at the psychology of everyday human behaviour

If you could travel anywhere tomorrow, where would you go?

Back to New Zealand (but via Canada, which has been on my list for ages!)
