The original AIDS Memorial Quilt was conceived in the US in 1985 by activist Cleve Jones, and continues to serve as a powerful memorial to those who have died from AIDS-related causes, symbolising the impact of the epidemic on the LGBTQ+ community and beyond.
The concept of the AIDS quilts spread around the world and you will find many different and beautiful examples.
We last made a quilt in 2005, 20 years after the original quilt, and with another 20 years having passed it seems fitting to create a new one, to raise awareness, end the stigma and share the love of the amazing community who have both been affected by and supported those with HIV and AIDS.
Cornerhouse first started life as the community group AIDS Action, becoming formally registered as a charity in 1988, while our work looks a lot different today, our values, ethos and pride come from our foundations in AIDS Action.
Let’s stitch together hope, remembrance & unity.
