In October 1854, Queen Victoria made a visit to Kingston upon Hull that would become one of the most memorable moments in the city’s history. It was the first time in more than 200 years that a reigning monarch had set foot in the town, and the news alone caused a wave of excitement long before she arrived.

What made the occasion even more remarkable was how little warning Hull was given. The Mayor received official confirmation only days beforehand, leaving the town scrambling to prepare. Committees were hurriedly formed, plans drawn up, and streets decorated. Shopkeepers, businesses and ordinary residents all joined in, determined that Hull would present itself at its very best.

The Queen travelled south by rail from Scotland, accompanied by Prince Albert and members of the royal household. When the train finally arrived in Hull on the evening of 13 October, large crowds were already waiting despite the late hour. People packed the streets near the station, eager for even a brief glimpse of their monarch. Cheers rang out as the royal carriage passed, accompanied by music and military es**rt.

That night, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert attended a formal dinner at the Station Hotel, where leading figures from the town and county gathered to welcome them. The occasion was marked by careful ceremony and considerable pride. Hull, often overlooked compared to larger cities, was suddenly at the centre of national attention.

The following morning brought even greater scenes. People travelled in from nearby towns and villages, filling the streets long before the royal procession began. Children lined the roads, flags were waved from windows, and temporary arches were raised to mark the route. As the Queen toured parts of the town, the atmosphere was described as joyful and overwhelming, with crowds stretching as far as the eye could see.

During the visit, the Mayor, Henry Cooper, was unexpectedly knighted by the Queen in recognition of his role in organising the occasion. From that moment, he became Sir Henry Cooper, an honour that added another historic footnote to an already extraordinary event.

Later that afternoon, the royal party departed by water, boarding the royal yacht from the Corporation Pier. The farewell was as enthusiastic as the welcome, with thousands watching as the vessel moved away along the Humber. In time, the pier itself would be renamed Victoria Pier, a permanent reminder of the visit.

The legacy of those two days remains visible across Hull even now. Victoria Dock, Queen Victoria Square and Queen’s Gardens all carry her name, linking the modern city to that autumn in 1854. For Hull, the visit was more than a formal royal engagement. It was a moment of recognition, pride and belonging, when the town felt truly seen by the nation and its Queen.
