This week’s class sessions have been truly incredible. Continuing our focus on mindful connection through the senses, we immersed ourselves in sound and music — closing our eyes, slowing down, and allowing the world around us to guide our creativity.

Through listening carefully to different sounds and rhythms, students explored mark making as a way of expressing what they could hear and feel. What begins with uncertainty or anticipation quickly transforms into calm engagement; breathing slows, minds settle, and creativity begins to flow naturally.

As a creative therapist, these are the moments I love most — watching young people discover that creativity isn’t about perfection, getting it “right,” or producing the same outcome as everyone else. It’s about self-expression, emotional regulation, and creating something unique and meaningful from their own experience of the world around them.

Activities like these provide safe opportunities for reflection, connection, and confidence building, reminding students that creativity can be both calming and empowering. ✨🎶🎨

In our Phoenix wellbeing sessions this half term, we’re exploring something simple but powerful — our senses.

Our senses give us constant information about the world around us. They help us understand what feels safe, what doesn’t, and how we respond. But what we’re discovering is this: slowing down enough to truly notice them is not easy.

Our brains are wired to move fast — to scan everything at once rather than pause and focus on just one thing, like a smell, a taste, or the feeling of something in our hands. Taking that time feels unfamiliar… but it’s also where the magic happens.

Phoenix sessions are about creating that space.
A space to slow down.
To connect more meaningfully.
To notice what we usually miss.

When we do that, something shifts — we can breathe more deeply, think more clearly, and begin to access both logical and creative thinking in a calmer way.

In education, especially alternative provisions, this kind of mindfulness-based psychoeducation isn’t just a nice idea — it’s essential. It helps our young people build awareness, regulation, and connection to themselves and the world around them.

Take a moment now…
What can you hear?
What can you feel?
What can you notice that you didn’t before?

Our senses are often underrated — but they’re incredibly powerful.
