This patient with Type III, Stage II lipoedema underwent two sessions of lymph-sparing liposuction, with 11.5L of fat removed from the front and back of her lower limbs.
With her legs feeling lighter post-surgery, she was able to begin high-intensity interval training, and together with surgery, this led to a weight loss of over a stone.
Most importantly, her quality of life improved. As she shared with Mr Karri:

💬 “I am very pleased with the outcome of both surgeries. Thank you all once again for helping me regain my health and quality of life.”

Lipoedema isn’t caused by lifestyle, but the right management can make a real difference to symptoms.

✔️ Lifestyle changes can help reduce pain, swelling & inflammation (but won’t remove lipoedema fat)
✔️ Compression plays a key role in daily comfort and swelling control
✔️ Specialist assessment is essential, no two cases are the same

Education first. Support always.

Does BMI matter when it comes to Lipoedema surgery?

According to Mr Vasu Karri, the answer is yes and no – it’s nuanced.

If enlarged legs are the main contributor to a higher BMI, surgery can still be appropriate, even for patients with a BMI over 45. However, if there is also significant central or visceral fat, weight loss (or weight loss surgery) may be recommended first to support safer surgery and better rehabilitation outcomes.

Every patient is assessed individually. The priority is always safety, recovery, and achieving the best possible outcome.

Lipoedema is not a lack of willpower.
It is not lifestyle choice.
And it is not “just weight.”

It is a medical condition that causes real pain, real fatigue and real emotional strain, often for years before it is recognised.

Many people come to us after being dismissed, misdiagnosed or told to try harder. That experience stays with you.

Change begins with listening.
With education.

With acknowledging what patients have been saying all along.

Awareness of lipoedema is improving, but there is more work to do, in research, in diagnosis and in care pathways.

To those living with lipoedema: your voice matters.

And progress is built by continuing to speak up.
