Millions around the UK experience stress - 74% of adults last year felt so stressed they felt overwhelmed/unable to cope.
So what is stress?
Stress is not an illness — it is a state of overwhelming pressure.
There is a difference between pressure, which can be motivating and help us deliver, and stress.
Stress is damaging and the result of too much pressure, or pressure over a prolonged period where there is no time for the individual to recover. This can be physically and mentally harmful.
Knowing the symptoms of stress can be a good first step to protecting your health.
Symptoms:
- difficulty sleeping/interrupted sleep
- not being able to concentrate
- difficulty remembering things
- increased or suppressed appetite
- feeling unwell more often
- feeling depressed/unhappy
- sense of feeling withdrawn from colleagues/friends/family
- increase in coping mechanisms e.g. smoking, drugs or alcohol
If you are experiencing stress symptoms try and identify the source of your stress, and take the following measures:
🗣Talk about it - if you are experiencing stress symptoms, speak about it with a family member/friend, your manager or your GP.
🏃Look after yourself - focus on keeping your body healthy; ensure you are eating and drinking appropriately, getting enough sleep, and exercise.
🧠Look after your mind - take time to relax and switch off from whatever is causing you stress e.g. read a good book, watching a film, set boundaries (e.g. if work is stressing you out, encourage others not to contact you outside working hours, switch off your work phone and other work devices)
🫂Ask for support - think about what is stressing you out on particular and see if there is anyone or additional resources that can help manage your stress.
✊Take an active role - what elements of your life or work can you change to help reduce stress?
