HUGE thank you to everyone who contributed to our fundraiser over the last few weeks! ✨
In total, we raised £1,160 for the charity (£360 more than last year!) which will go directly to Tree of Hope to help families of sick and disabled children with healthcare fundraising support.
Special thanks to the amazing Magda (.cakes) as well as Emily, Erin and Ken who also got baking for a good cause 👏
Wishing all our patients and staff a very happy new year! ✨
Grace began her treatment with us at age 15, after being advised by surgeons to consider surgery. Given her age and Risser sign of 3/4, there was an 80% chance her curve would worsen before she stopped growing.
We prescribed the LOC Scoliosis Brace, combined with Schroth-based therapy, aimed to halt her curve progression and improve her posture without surgery.
Wearing her brace for 23 hours a day and following a tailored exercise regimen, Grace managed her treatment and visited The London Orthotic Consultancy for appointments - all while navigating secondary school and exams.
Her progress was monitored through in-brace and out-of-brace X-rays and by September this year, she had reduced her curve from 44 degrees to 24 degrees and was discharged with excellent posture — a testament to her dedication over the past three years.
Grace’s hard work has paid off, just in time for her to start her first term at university without needing her brace.
Congratulations, Grace 👏

Sofia, who is now 19, has now been out of her LOC scoliosis brace for over a year and there has been no regression in her curve.
Because she is now skeletally mature it means she should not require surgery in later life. We spoke to her and mum Elena about their experience of bracing treatment.
Sofia no longer needs surgery to correct her scoliosis following successful bracing treatment with the LOC scoliosis brace.

Publication announcement! 📢
We are very proud to share that our work has been recognised in the Global Spine Journal (GSJ) 🔬
The Global Spine Congress 2024 Abstracts Special Issue contains two published articles authored by The London Orthotic Consultancy, led by Senior Orthotists Anna Courtney and Sam Walmsley.
The first abstract, ‘On-site clinician-led bracing algorithm with short clinical feedback loops lead to significant improvements in bracing outcomes’ examines how our approach to conservative treatment with the hashtag achieves better outcomes.
The other paper, ‘Assessing the presentation of adolescents seeking bracing treatment in the UK, using SRS bracing guidelines’ looks at the current metrics used when determining whether a patient should treat their scoliosis with surgery or bracing, and whether these remain to be applicable.
A big thank you to our coauthors St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for the hard and exciting work behind these papers, including Darren F. Lui, Jason Bernard and Tim Bishop.
When she was 14 years old, Polly was trying on a dress for a party and her mother Zoe (a GP) was helping her pull the zip at the back up. As she pulled the zip up, the dress leaned to one side and immediately she knew that her daughter had scoliosis.
Read how a brace prevented Polly’s scoliosis curve from getting worse and helped her avoid spinal surgery.
Diagnosed with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis at 14 years old, Polly and mum Zoe looked to the LOC Scoliosis Brace to help her curve and avoid surgery at a later date.

We offer a free initial virtual scoliosis appointment for those seeking scoliosis advice and treatment. This initial free virtual consultation is through Skype, Facetime or Zoom.
This allows you to talk directly to one of our specialist clinicians about your child’s scoliosis. During this 15-minute appointment, your clinician can answer any detailed questions or concerns you might have before booking a face-to-face assessment with us.

A bespoke brace can stop the progression of and prevent spinal surgery 🩻
Here's a before and after x-ray from one of our scoliosis patients who has gone through treatment with the LOC Scoliosis Brace.
Adolescent female patient from Chile whose Cobb angle reduced from 29 to 14 degrees in 4 months. Only a year and a half since she began wearing her brace she has achieved near-total correction of the curve.

Welcome to our specific page for patients undergoing scoliosis treatment at the London Orthotic Consultancy (LOC).
Established in August 2004, the LOC was set up by by four clinicians who originally worked with the NHS in hospitals around London.
Scoliosis is defined as the abnormal twisting of the spine and can affect everyone from babies to adults though often becomes apparent during the growth spurt before puberty. Affecting around three to four in every 1,000 children in the UK, it is typically seen between the ages of 10 and 15.
At the London Orthotic Consultancy we treat scoliosis non-surgically with the Schroth method, which uses physiotherapy and if appropriate a brace, to normalise the postural alignment of the spine. Our scoliosis clinic is headed by clinician Deborah Turnbull, a BSc. CSP and HCPC registered physiotherapist, with over 10 years experience treating scoliosis with this method. In total we have three qualified Schroth method clinicians, trained in Germany by leading Schroth expert Dr Hans-Rudolf Weiss, and grandson of pioneer Katharina Schroth who developed the 3D scoliosis treatment according to Schroth in the 1920s.
LOC has recently been recognised by the Schroth Best Practice Academy as the only best practice bracing centre in London and the south of England. Our Scoliosis clinic is led by Sally Hews BSc (Hons).
Potential benefits of our scoliosis treatment programme include:
halted or reduced progression of the condition (depending upon age and flexibility)
improved lung function
improved rib cage shape
improved postural appearance and pain reduction (especially in adults) through postural adaptation and an orthotic brace if appropriate.
There is a growing body of evidence that points to the Schroth method and to the Gensingen brace as the most effective brace for correcting scoliosis.
