Reliance on care is not the goal when it comes to your healing journey. However, just like anything in life, consistency will bring you closer to your goals and desirable results. This applies to your Osteopathic care too.

My holistic, patient-centred approachΒ enables patients to understand their pain and become independent at managing it; there is noΒ reliance on care, instead patients are equipped with long term tools for a healthy and happy life πŸ€—.Β

Osteopathy for RARE Perthes disease in the R hip and general body MOT (pre-Covid)πŸ’†β€β™‚οΈ.

Personal trainer has battled with Perthes ever since his diagnosis as a child. Mike was once told he wouldn't be able to walk when he was a child due to the severity and level of pain of his condition.

Since then, and with regular (maintenance) physical therapy, Mike has been inspired him to become a fantastic PT, run marathons and walk miles raising money for children with this rare condition (as well as other charities) πŸ™.

Perthes is a rare condition affecting the hip
joint in children, involving a loss of blood supply to the femoral head (the ball part of the ball and socket joint situated at the top of the thigh bone).
This results in bone softening and collapse (known as AVN/ Avascular Necrosis).

The femoral head becomes deformed, causing hip pain, referred pain and other
problems.
Osteopathy proves useful in managing symptoms- loosening tension in soft tissues, restoring joint mobility and aiding the blood supply to return to the femoral head for healing.

As with all Osteopathy appointments, a full medical history and physical exam was taken to determine a diagnosis and treatment protocol.
Tailored prescribed home exercises and stretches empower Mike to manage his symptoms, working as a useful adjunct alongside a monthly MOT of Osteopathy.

Throughout the pandemic, Osteopathy appointments have only been undertaken following strict Covid hygiene and safety protocols, and treatment provided wearing full PPE. Patients must wear a mask, use hand gel, and answer Covid screening questions before every appointment.

I am also pleased to declare that as a Health Care Professional, I have now had both doses of the Covid vaccine πŸ’ͺ.
If you are considering Osteopathy for your symptoms but are concerned, please do get in touch and be assured I am doing everything to keep myself and you safe and out of pain 😊.

How to breath functionally to ease low back pain.

In university I conducted an experiement to determine if re-education to a normal breathing pattern improves lumbopelvic stability (core stability)- my dissertation.

Plenty of research shows that increasing core stability can help to reduce low back pain.

Background: Dysfunctional breathing has been identified as common among the general public. Historically, low back pain has been reported as the most common presenting complaint on visits to Osteopaths. Research has shown that there is a link between lumbopelvic stability and normal breathing.

Objective: To perform an experimental pilot study on Osteopathy students at Surrey Institute of Osteopathic Medicine (SIOM) to determine if re-education to a normal breathing pattern improves lumbopelvic stability.

Methods: The active straight leg raise test was conducted and a questionnaire was used to indicate levels of ease for an indication of lumbopelvic stability before and after breathing re-education of participants. Osteopathy students were recruited in a convenience sample: 10 participants (5 male and 5 female). A control group was recruited using the same number of individuals (5 male and 5 female) with no breathing re-education applied for comparison.

Results: Breathing re-education to a normal breathing pattern improved ASLR test scores. A statistically significant increase in ASLR test scores for the participant group before and after re-education compared with the control group was found (p=0.008 for both the left and right legs for the participant, p=0.37 and 0.157 for the left and right legs respectively for the control group). It was also apparent through observation that participants responded well to breathing re-education.

Conclusions: There is a potential for breathing re-education to improve lumbopelvic stability and address low back pain. Further work is required to identify the relationships between lumbopelvic stability, low back pain and breathing patterns.

So there it is- diaphragmatic functional breathing can reduce low back pain so I prescribe it to patients and in mindfulness events for anxiety relief and increased focus.

πŸ‘ HAPPY IWD! πŸŽ‰

Hiding who we are deep down at our core for fear of being judged, rejected or considered "abnormal" prevents us from growing and embracing our beautiful authentic selves πŸ’«.

We are not being true to our selves when we seek the approval and validation from others for our sense of self worth. I've certainly been there myself...

Over the years however, I have realised how much beauty lies in being an individual, and that "normal" doesn't exist.

I stopped trying to conform to society's view of "normal" and started to embrace my differences and creativity πŸŽ‰.

Maslow's Hierarchy of basic human needs draws that respect and recognition from society is quite high up as a psychological need, forming a platform for our self esteem.

However, the love, recognition and acceptance we receive from others does not compare to when we create this from within ourselves- it builds self awareness and unconditional self esteem πŸ’—.

Be WILD and be FREE 🌸; don't be afraid of having a personality.

Stop apologising for being the real version of you.
Because it is only once you start to embrace your real self, or your "WILD" that can truly know, love and accept yourself for who you are.
Self awareness is the first step towards self love and self acceptence πŸ’«.

Here's to all the amazing females out there...let's celebrate being who you are πŸŽ‰.

Thanks also to the wonderful women in my life who have helped to shape me into the woman I am today πŸ™.
