Elderberry Syrup recipe, which I’m making for my winter colds thanks to .. I’ve also added Bach Flower Rescue Remedy drops for its potent effect of emotional calming. Patricia x
“What you will need:
· A large saucepan
· A potato masher or strong fork
· A large mixing bowl
· 1 cup of fresh Elderberries
· 3 cups of water
· 1-2 teaspoons of freshly grated ginger root
· 5 dried cloves
· 1 cup of raw honey
· Brandy (optional)
Instructions
· Pour your fresh Elderberries, ginger and cloves into the saucepan and pour over the 3 cups of water.
· Bring the mix to a rapid boil and then turn the heat right down and simmer for 30-minutes.
· Mash up the berries using your potato masher or fork and then strain the mixture through a sieve into a clean mixing bowl.
· Pour in the honey and mix it thoroughly until the honey disperses evenly into the syrup. If the honey doesn’t disperse easily, then pour the mixture into a saucepan and heat on the lowest possible setting, stirring the honey continually until it melts.
· If using brandy (this will significantly prolong the shelf-life of the syrup) add ¼ cup of brandy for each cup of syrup that you have and mix this into the syrup really well.
· Pour the mixture into glass jars or bottles, label and date. Leave the syrup to cool before sealing with the lid to prevent condensation forming on the inside of the lid which can sometimes cause the remedy to spoil.
· The syrup will last for around 3-months if kept in the fridge and significantly longer if you included the brandy.
· Alternatively, pour the syrup into ice-cube trays and freeze them. These will then last all winter and you can simply pop out one cube of frozen syrup as you need it.
· To use, take 1 teaspoon every day as a general immune tonic during the winter months to prevent winter infections. At the first sign of a cold, flu or respiratory infection, take 1tsp of syrup every 2 hours, either taken off the spoon or added to hot water to make a tea.” -
