CoolSculptingÂź 101: Your Top Questions About the Nonsurgical Treatment
Both women and men are increasingly coming to us for CoolSculpting. If you’re considering this fat freezing treatment, you likely have a few questions about the reality behind the buzzed-about procedure. You may have heard about the popularity of the treatment and its benefits, but aren’t sure if it’s the right body contouring option for you.

In this blog post, we would like to answer a few of the questions we hear most often from prospective patients to fill you in on everything you need to know about CoolSculpting.

What is CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting is a nonsurgical body contouring procedure that safely freezes and destroys fat cells—a process called cryolipolysis—in localized areas without damaging surrounding tissue. These cells are naturally metabolized out of the body, reducing fat in targeted areas over the course of 3 or so months.

Who is the ideal candidate?
Ideal CoolSculpting candidates are at or near their target weight and are struggling with stubborn pockets of fat that resist diet and exercise. The main areas of concern include the abdomen, thighs, and flanks.

What is the treatment process like?
During the treatment, the cooling applicator is applied to the area of fat you want to reduce. You may experience a cold sensation or numbness, as if you were applying an ice pack. You’ll relax for about an hour while the treatment takes place. Once you’re finished, we will massage the treated area for 2 to 3 minutes, at which time you may experience some tingling, thawing, or redness. After that, you will be able to return to your normal activities immediately.

How long does it take?
Each treatment area takes about an hour. Patients are welcome to relax, read, or even check email during the appointment. You will likely start to notice results within a few weeks, and they’ll fully develop in 2 or 3 months, at which time you can decide if you would like to opt for additional treatments.

Which areas can be treated with CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting can treat the abdomen, inner and outer thighs, hips, arms, and flanks.

What are the anticipated results?
Each patient’s results vary, but you can generally expect to see a moderate slimming effect within the treated areas. It’s important to note that CoolSculpting isn’t intended to be a weight-loss treatment, but a method of reducing small areas of fat. Please visit our before-and-after photo gallery to see real patient examples.

How can I maintain my results?
The key to maintaining your results is to keep your body weight stable. Following a regular exercise regimen, trying out creative and challenging workouts, and walking around throughout the day can all work toward that goal. In addition, eating a healthy diet, staying hydrated, and reducing stress with meditation and self-care can be helpful.

How Liposuction Makes Your Resolutions Stick
Raise your hand if you’ve resolved to lead a healthier, more active lifestyle this year. Still on track? Maintaining a commitment to getting more exercise and improving your eating habits can be difficult. Body contouring procedures such as liposuction can help motivate you to stick with your New Year’s resolution. People who come in for liposuction at our Atlanta practice tell us that the desire to maintain their results keeps them going to the gym
 and also to pursue liposuction.
There is still a misconception that liposuction is a short-cut to losing weight. That’s not the case at all. Liposuction isn’t a weight-loss procedure. It’s actually an ideal treatment for women and men who are already in good shape but who can’t get rid of stubborn bulges that persist despite exercise and dieting. Combining a commitment to a healthy lifestyle with liposuction can help you enjoy the results of your hard work.

Getting to Your Goal Weight
The best liposuction patients are at or near the weight they want to maintain. For people still on that journey, liposuction can be a goal that helps motivate them to continue their healthy habits, including:

Following a regular exercise regimen: Regular doesn’t mean doing the same thing over and over. Avoid getting in an exercise rut, which is one of the main reasons people stop working out. Change things up by running and swimming and keep your workouts creative and challenging. Incorporate weights, yoga, aerobics, and anything else that makes exercise more interesting.
Getting up and moving at work: A sedentary job can sabotage your weight-loss efforts. Be sure to get up and move several times during the day, and, even better, schedule a brisk walk during a break or lunch.
Watching what you eat: Don’t obsess over counting calories but do pay attention to your diet. Weight loss for most people is really as simple as consuming fewer calories than you burn. It’s also important to eat veggies and fruit and drink plenty of water.
Not stressing: I really believe that taking some time each day to clear your mind of deadlines or other worries is just as important as exercise.
Once you’ve achieved your goals, liposuction can create the final contours. Something our plastic surgeons hear from patients considering liposuction is that they’re frustrated because they still feel uncomfortable wearing bathing suits or other revealing clothes even after putting in the work to reduce their weight. Some fat simply resists those efforts.
Liposuction removes fat for good. When we lose weight, fat cells shrink. But they can always get larger again. Fat cells removed with liposuction aren’t replaced. That doesn’t mean you can’t become overweight, but the fat will tend to accumulate in other areas of the body.

Our Top Anti-Aging Options
You don’t have to have surgery to reveal a more youthful you. With med spa procedures from microdermabrasion to BOTOX¼ Cosmetic, practice offers a wide range of nonsurgical ways to rejuvenate your look through noninvasive or minimally invasive approaches.

With regular maintenance and upkeep, these treatments can deliver long-lasting results and even prevent the need for future surgical procedures in some cases. If you’re wondering where to begin, we have put together a list of our favorite options to help you determine which treatment or combination of treatments may be right for you.

BOTOX
This minimally invasive injectable treatment relaxes specific muscles in the face to smooth out wrinkles created by repeated contractions over time. Popular BOTOX treatment areas include the glabellar lines between the eyebrows and crow’s feet on the outer corners of the eyes. Some patients start these treatments as early as their late 20s to prevent future lines and wrinkles. Results typically last about 3 months.

Dermal Fillers
Another injectable option, dermal fillers provide volume under the skin to fill in lines and wrinkles, restore fullness in the cheeks and temples, and address other contouring concerns. Many of these fillers are made of hyaluronic acid, a hydrating substance found naturally in the body. However, our practice uses a variety of filler formulations that each work best for different concerns. Depending on the product, results can last up to 2 years.

ThermiÂź
Thermi treatments use gentle, controlled heat to tighten lax skin. Radiofrequency energy stimulates collagen production that creates firmer and more toned skin in a variety of areas. Results develop gradually and have been known to last for years.

Chemical Peels
Chemical peels, or facial peels, exfoliate the skin through the use of chemical solutions that cause the outer layers to flake off. This reveals a newly generated layer of skin that is smoother, more even, and more refreshed overall. These come in several variations that range from minimally invasive peels to deeper treatments that require some downtime and provide dramatic transformations. Peel results may last for years, depending on the strength of treatment you choose.

Microdermabrasion
Another form of exfoliation, microdermabrasion uses fine crystals to sand away imperfections such as acne, sun damage, and fine lines. The process also helps stimulate collagen production, which leads to ongoing tightening and improves resistance to the effects of aging. With regular treatments, microdermabrasion can be instrumental in maintaining young, refreshed skin.

Fast Facts About Liposuction
Year in and year out, one of the most consistently popular procedures performed at our, practice is liposuction. Patients from Plastic Surgery Center for this highly effective treatment that immediately reduces stubborn fat. These areas may be due to family traits rather than a lack of weight control or fitness.

Even though liposuction is a surgical procedure, it can sometimes be performed by one of our board-certified plastic surgeons using a local anesthetic with sedation. It’s an outpatient procedure, which means you can go home on the day of the surgery. If you’re considering liposuction, I think knowing some interesting facts about the procedure can help you feel confident about the surgery.

Some fast facts about liposuction:

It is the most common cosmetic procedure in the U.S, with more than 300,000 liposuction surgeries performed each year.
Patients who want to lose weight won’t benefit from liposuction. It’s designed for women and men who are already at or near the weights they want to maintain.
When patients are targeting larger areas, our surgeons use general anesthesia.
The most common areas for liposuction are the abdomen, waist, hips, thighs, arms, and back.
Several different liposuction techniques are available. Tumescent liposuction is one of the most popular. Others include dry liposuction, ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL), power-assisted liposuction (PAS) laser-assisted lipolysis (LAL). Each technique has unique benefits, but the skill of the surgeon is always more important than the technique used.
Risks include severe bruising, inflammation, thrombophlebitis, and contour irregularities. The risk of complications is usually associated with how large the procedure is, as well as the surgeon’s skills and specific training.
Liposuction slims and reshapes specific areas of your body by removing excess fat deposits, improving your body contours and proportion, and ultimately, enhancing your self-image. Fat transfer procedures can also be used to enhance other areas of your body such as the buttocks or breast. Liposuction works best for people with good skin tone and elasticity, where the skin molds itself into new contours.

To discover how body contouring procedures can help your look, request a consultation with one of our specially trained board certified plastic surgeons. During a thorough examination, your expectations and realistic goals will be discussed and a plan of action set in place. Be careful not to put your body on the “Discount Rack” by choosing a surgeon based on the lowest price. The cost of liposuction varies from practice to practice and depends on the extent of the procedure, but choosing a surgeon based on cost might ultimately be the most expensive choice if you end up needing revision surgery. Choose your physician based on the surgeon’s expertise and experience. We always suggest doing your homework and getting a couple different consultation/quotes so that you can make an informed decision.

The Truth About Tummy Tuck Drains
One of the biggest concerns many people have when it comes to recovering from a tummy tuck, area practice is caring for surgical drains. These helpful devices can have a negative image and may seem daunting to deal with, but their role in recovery is a crucial one.

In this blog post, we’ll let you in on the truth about tummy tuck drains: from what they really achieve to what it’s really like living with them.

What is a drain used for after tummy tuck surgery?
Put simply, surgical drains help relieve the buildup of inflammatory fluid that can occur after certain procedures. During tummy tuck recovery, this buildup typically occurs between the skin and the muscle. It’s called a seroma, and it can increase your risk for complications including infection, fever, swelling, and discomfort. By allowing this fluid to escape from the body, drains encourage a safe and speedy healing process.

Having a drain in place shouldn’t be uncomfortable, especially with the use of EXPAREL¼, a slow-release pain medication that’s injected into the surgical site during your procedure. Only a thin tube remains in an incision on your abdomen, and it’s connected to a bulb outside your body that collects the excess fluid.

The drains will only be in place for about a week, at which time we’ll remove them at a follow-up appointment.
How do you care for a drain after surgery?
While drains help prevent a number of risks, they do come with some minimal risks themselves, the main concern being an infection. If the bulb or tube is contaminated with bacteria, it can make its way into the body. For this reason, it’s important to keep the area around the drain clean and thoroughly wash your hands before emptying or handling the bulb.

You can shower with drains in place, but we recommend securing them in place with s strip of gauze or a belt to prevent the water from tugging on or dislocating them. Many patients opt for sponge baths for the first few days to avoid this issue. Very well Health offers more information about caring for surgical drains.

How long do drains stay in after a tummy tuck?
The key fact to remember is that despite their bad rap, surgical drains are really only in place for about a week, during which time your activities will be limited as you recover.

If you’re considering this fat freezing treatment, you likely have a few questions about the reality behind the buzzed-about procedure. These cells are naturally metabolized out of the body, reducing fat in targeted areas over the course of 3 or so months. Ideal CoolSculpting candidates are at or near their target weight and are struggling with stubborn pockets of fat that resist diet and exercise.

During the treatment you will be able to read, answer emails, or chat with a friend. After the applicator is detached, your provider will do a brief massage on the area to break up the treated fat cells and enhance the fat reduction, you may experience some tingling, thawing, or redness.
