It’s OCD Awareness Week! Let’s talk about what OCD REALLY is
OCD—Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder—is often misunderstood. It’s not just about being neat, tidy, or liking things “just right.” It’s a serious mental health condition where people experience unwanted, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and feel compelled to perform repetitive behaviours (compulsions) to relieve anxiety. These compulsions can take many forms, such as excessive handwashing, checking, counting, or seeking reassurance.
OCD can be exhausting and distressing, often interfering with daily life, relationships, and well-being. For those affected, these thoughts and rituals aren’t a choice—they are driven by deep anxiety and an overwhelming need for relief.
By raising awareness, we can break the stigma and create a more understanding, supportive world for those living with OCD.
If you or someone you know is struggling with OCD, support is available—you are not alone.
