Modalities are often defined by their principles, movement rules, and cueing styles.
The physical exercises themselves can overlap across disciplines - Mat Pilates, yoga, Gyrotonic, personal training. What often differs is the emphasis placed on certain variations, depending on the instructor’s training.
But here’s the thing: the real distinction between modalities often comes down to the storytelling, the narrative we build as practitioners. That narrative shapes how people perceive hierarchy within the fitness world.
In my experience, there is no single “best” movement modality for everyone.
The magic of a positive movement experience lies in the connection between the instructor and the individual.
When the person, not the modality, is the focus, movement becomes far more impactful.
If the approach moves around you, rather than the other way around, any form of movement can be beneficial.
If you love aqua fitness—keep doing it.
If you love classical Pilates—keep doing it.
If CrossFit lights you up—keep doing it.
If walking with your best friend and a coffee in hand brings you joy—keep doing it.
The key is to listen to your body and notice what feels good for you.
You are the guru.
Your body knows.
Movement is medicine
