Neck

5 things that actually help improve posture:

1. Get your mid back moving again
A stiff thoracic spine pushes the head forward and overloads the lower back. Gentle rotation and extension give the spine more freedom.

2. Build strength in the muscles that hold you up
Strong glutes, hamstrings, and upper back make it easier to stay upright without effort.

3. Improve shoulder blade control
When the shoulder blades move and stabilize better, neck tension often drops and the upper back can move more naturally.

4. Fix the way you breathe
Shallow breathing and flared ribs lock the body into poor posture. Slow nasal breathing and full exhales help stack the rib cage over the pelvis again.

5. Practice posture while moving, not holding
Carrying, hinging, rowing, and split squats teach the body how to organize itself under load. Forcing “good posture” doesn’t last.

Better posture comes from better support, not constant reminders.

This lifebuoy is a metaphor for the life line we throw out to burnout sufferers.

But it is somewhat over simplistic as a diagram for reversing burnout.

Yes it shows clearly that there can be a cycle of burnout ….wellbeing to burnout.. back to wellbeing , then back to burnout again (this can go on for years). So far so good.

But the number of steps or stages at each black arrow is not … one. Rather there are 12 steps into burnout and not surprisingly …. 12 steps out of it. However, escaping burnout is NOT merely a matter of reversing through the steps involved in burnout arising …because the route in & the route out are COMPLETELY different.

Understanding the 12 in and 12 out is the key to eliminating burnout … swiftly, easily and …permanently.

There are phases to burnout recovery and to eliminate severe burnout …completing all of them is essential .

One of the reasons burnout can be so hard to shift is that sufferers (& their healthcare advisors) repeatedly jump to phase 5 without doing the preparation and groundwork phases . Without a proper foundation burnout merely embeds , festers or repeats .

One of the earliest phase actions with Burnout Geese is to do our short quiz . It is not diagnostic but it helps to scope out what you know about burnout and to clarify precisely how it is affecting you . This is a really important step in the flight path out of burnout

Q: When to take our quiz?

There is a journey into burnout and a flight path out of burnout. And they are not the same route.

What does this mean? It means that using a simple reversal of what appears to have got you into burnout is rarely sufficient to get you fully out of it… permanently.

What tends to happen too is that a cyclical pattern gets set up so that burnout recycles itself … resulting in many sequential episodes where the burnout appears to get better but in fact it goes underground merely to emerge again ( often worse each time) .

So if any of this feels like something you’ve been going through and you’d like to get out of burnout for good…you can do our quiz on the home page as a first step.

There are 6 phases to burnout resolution. One of the reasons it is so tough to reverse burnout and keep it reversed is that people tend to want to jump to phase 5 without doing the first 4.

Phase 5 is "implementation of a reverse burnout plan" but what are the other 4 ?

Burnout tends to never go if 1-4 are not done first.
And - even if 5 is completed - without 6 there is a risk it will return.

To learn more start with our quiz to see what you already know about burnout and YOUR burnout.

The journey into burnout is in a different direction to the journey out and…. it can easily end up as a repeating cycle . So it is important not to only address the ‘help.. how can I get out of burnout?’ but also what maintains and sustains wellbeing. Both sides of the burnout doughnut are important.

How do depression, holidays & burnout interact?

Depression can be present before burnout begins .
Depression can arise during burnout.. coincidentally or related.
In the latter stages of severe burnout, depression is a feature.

What this means is that some people are prescribed antidepressants ‘for’ burnout.
Burnout does not reverse on antidepressants.

Nor does it go away after a holiday . Yet a short break away from work &/or antidepressants are often the ‘treatment’.

That doesn’t make holidays or antidepressants bad.... just that burnout is unlikely to improve with those two ‘interventions’ primarily because the causes of burnout are not depression or lack of holiday.

In order to reverse the suffering of burnout one needs to look at the multiple and unique blend of things contributing to that persons burnout.

Antidepressants may be indicated IF there is clear evidence of depression but.... that will treat the depression NOT the burnout.

Similarly a good long break from work can assist recovery from burnout but most normal holidays are simply not long enough .

If no changes are made to the job or how the person copes ....most people with burnout will dread going on holiday and... returning from holiday
