A follow on from the SCAPULA post. Your shoulder blades can get a good wiggle on.

It can be helpful to think of the body as a chain of events.

Everything is connected & so tightness in the lower back or side bending muscles impacts how the jolly ol' scapula will move.

For example if the serratus anterior (see last slide for a visual) is habitually engaged & tight it can mean the scapula is protracting with upwards rotation, making elevation (straight up movement of blades) difficult & likely cause pain over time.

There's a lot more going on in these movements than I've outlined here, this post is simply a starting point to guide.

Classes & workshops are open to all levels.

It's about connecting to your body & breath while sharing supportive space.

A beautiful bone.

This video shows some of the movements it can make.

✨️ Range of motion with this bone can be affected by injury, reptitive movements, tension from sport, tension from posture or habitual stress responses.

✨️ As time goes on we can build the awareness of how this bone moves in relationship to muscles, fascia and our understanding of what it's supposed to be doing for specific movements. Keep in mind sometimes the 'supposed to be doing' just isn't helpful for our body at that time. It's a dance of listening to what feels appropriate for you & moving in a direction rather than end result.

✨️ One thing that's been a game changer for me with movement is the idea of glide & slide. Instead of stretching sometimes the notion of glide and slide encourages fuller breathing and allowing the bones to suspend in the fascia rather than squeezing or pushing it to be a certain way.

✨️ It can be beneficial to visualise the movement of the scapula on the back of the ribcage! Video on asana to help with this coming later in the week 🙌

Wake up the body, breath & mind.

Ashtanga can be a beautiful gateway into exploring the bringing together of these & many layers of yoga.

It is continuous learning when we come to the mat space with Ashtanga.

The asana, maintaining the steady rhythm of breath, allowing your body grace, letting go of striving to achieve 'perfect' asana instead building awareness & being present with where your body is in space. It's challenging. With challenge comes the mind chatter in the stories we have about our bodies & abilities, this is where we can embrace philosophy study in movement:

🙏 Yamas - Philosophy offering an opportunity to work on discipline.

✨️ Niyamas - Philosophy offering insight for positive action.

🙏 Asana - Postures and connection to physical body.

✨️ Pranayama - Breath work.

🙏 Pratyahara - Sense Withdrawal.

✨️ Dharana - Focused concentration on one thing to work on steadying the mind and thoughts.

🙏 Dhyana - Deep meditation and self knowledge.

✨️ Samadhi - Bliss or enlightenment, life in the present moment.

These are the 8 limbs of Patanjali's Yoga. We'll explore some of these as we move through practice in this Sundays Discover Ashtanga session.

So delighted that @ will be hosting the April Anatomy Lab at Cairngorms Yoga Studio this Sunday the 6th of April.

Louise has a wealth of knowledge that she is passionate to share in a helpful way.

The feet really are incredible foundations.

Building an understanding of the trotters & how the workings of the feet ripples up into our knees and femur bone in the ol' hip socket can be a game changer.

It doesn't just offer more ease and stability in your yoga asana practice, it can improve your physical balance in daily life, assist in managing pain in the legs, improve running and prevent injury in sports.

We teamed up for a run recently & a few small tweaks from Louise on how I was working from my feet & I felt so much more power & stability higher up in my legs.

Tomorrow @ 8.30am

We'll continue to work through surya namaskara A & B followed by standing asana, closing with some exploration into back bending & shoulder stand prep.

Ashtanga offers a solid foundation when comes to building confidence in asana (yoga postures).

It offers a wonderful place to begin exploring chanting within practice.

Ashtanga can be a gateway into practicing in an embodied way, listening in to sensations as you move through the set sequence, practising breath & nervous system regulation as challenges arise.

There are many layers to it, this is 1 hour of exploring some of the practice! Beginners & all levels of experience welcome.

🩷 Maybe the goal is not always to be regulated.

✨️ The aim might be to hold our own in the dsyregulation, be able to observe it, & prevent chaos or some form of injury or harm.

🧘‍♀️The monthly Meditation & Bodyfulness Class offers time in physical stillness. We concentrate on mapping the nervous system, explore encouraging a spacious brain & create more freedom mentally.

✨️ By releasing tension in the sensitive brain tissues we allow more freedom for the cranial nerves, endocrine glands & spinal cord. Our breathing slows & the parasympathetic nerves increase.

🔥 Tonight we'll be blending some releasing movement in somatic exercises followed by seated meditation. Not always easy to sit in the silence 😬 🤯 We'll work our mental & emotional resilience & flexibility.

🧠 Getting to know the brain & the deeper connection of the gut-brain axis can be a game changer in our health... eventually we come to be within Anandamaya Kosha, a state of contentment.
