I was grateful for my intelligent brain today - it helped me wrap what seemed like a mountain of presents, ice the Christmas cake and lay the table ready for tomorrow. If you’d told my teenage self that I’d one day feel calm and collected giving presentations or teaching yoga to a room full of people, I’d never have believed you. Back then, even singing in a choir would send me into a full-blown panic—my first instinct was always to bolt for the nearest exit!

Fast forward to today, and I’m grateful every day for the confidence I now have to stand up and share my ideas—whether that’s delivering a work presentation or guiding a group of yogis. The turning point for me? Hypnotherapy. It was truly life-changing. I remember thinking, “I’d love to help others in this way one day.” Life took me on a different path for a while: university, my first job, buying a house. But eventually, I found the chance to retrain and finally pursue my passion.

A huge thank you to CPHT and their brilliant lecturers for providing such a supportive, practical course—it genuinely prepares you to run your own hypnotherapy practice. Recently, I had the privilege of speaking to a group of students, sharing my journey and hopefully inspiring them to step out confidently and start building their own practices. If you’re considering a change, or struggling with confidence, know that transformation is possible.

Sometimes it can seem like everything in your life is going wrong. When this happens it can be hard to talk about it. It can feel incredibly lonely because everyone you meet seems to having an easier time. Often you do not want to burden other people with your problems, so it becomes even lonelier. Maybe you even feel guilty or angry.

If this sounds like you, please know that you are not the only one. Whatever is going on, you are worthy of compassion and you deserve happiness. Human beings never get it right all the time. You CAN get back to a better place - it may take some time, it may take effort - you may even need a helping hand. But please do not give up. It is often during our worst times that we learn how to live better, to make the positive changes that take us above the storm clouds. Take good care of yourself today - you are precious.🫶🫶

This post reminds me a lot of my life:
*walked away from my studies at 17 due to low self esteem/depression
*got a job which restored my confidence
*went back to studying at 21 and went to university
*had a successful career
*gave up my office job due to a chronic eye condition at 49
*retrained as a yoga teacher at 49
*retrained as a hypnotherapist at 52
Who knows what life will bring next but the ability to pick yourself up and adapt to the new normal can actually be a catalyst for positive change and growth.

What I could not have foreseen all those years ago at 17 was how adversity can often result in opportunities I never thought possible. Would I prefer to be working in an office environment now? Probably not - although the pension would be welcome!

It's never too late to start.

The low road and high road neural pathways theory explains how our brain processes emotional responses. The "low road" is a fast, automatic pathway that triggers immediate reactions to stimuli, often without conscious thought. This pathway is responsible for our instinctive responses, such as the fight-or-flight reaction.

On the other hand, the "high road" is a slower, more deliberate pathway that involves higher cognitive processing. This pathway allows us to evaluate and interpret stimuli, leading to more thoughtful and rational responses. The high road engages the prefrontal cortex, which helps us make decisions based on past experiences and reasoning.

We can train ourselves to manage our emotional responses more effectively. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy helps the brain recognise when we're reacting instinctively through the low road. It can help the brain to engage the high road and respond more thoughtfully. This awareness can lead to better emotional regulation and improved mental well-being.

Unlike animals, humans do not just live by their instincts. We are special in that we are constantly evolving and improving - finding new ways in which to get things done. We are innovators.🎨

We learn from making mistakes and having experiences - both good and bad. The ability to remember is essential - but too much time spent remembering negative experiences can increase our stress and plunge us into a negative thinking spiral.🤔

Your mistakes and embarrassments only prove that you got out there and tried to create something. Your past does not need to follow you about like a shadow – leave it where it belongs and keep moving forward.👍
